Description:
Boston, MA: West and Richardson, 1818. First American. Blue printed wraps, bound into a red cardboard cover with tape along the spine. Very good. 5" x 8.5", pp. 6 - 40. Aging to paper and occasional fox marks with shadow of print text block on opposing page. A few spots and smudges on the cover. Enclosure has a chipped top right corner, but not affecting the pamphlet. Scarce account by an officer who was the Aide-de-Camp to General Ferrier during Murat's reign and had a first person opportunity to observe Murat when he was elevated to the King of Naples. Murat became Napoleon's brother-in-law through marriage and was executed for treason by a firing squad of his own men in 1815. "Murat had the courage of Cesar, the rashness of Charles the twelfth, the openness of Hery the fourth, and perhaps some of his good nature; but his genius and talents in military concerns, as well as politics, how far short in comparison to any of them!" (p 40).
