Contemporary mottled calf, gilt border and doule-headed eagle to covers, spine with raised bands gilt in compartments, contrasting morocco labels gilt-lettered to two, marbled endpapers, blue edges; slightly rubbed. beautiful, fresh copy of the first edition of this rare work, all plates with contemporary hand-colouring. First edition, 4to, [4]pp., list of plates, 159, 76 handcoloured aquatints including frontispiece, 5 folding, one with short split to fold, later maroon straight-grained morocco gilt, an excellent example. 'John Papworth was the architect responsible for the design of Ackermann's showroom at 101 Strand. He adopted the second name of Buonarroti after his friends acclaimed him as a second Michelangelo following his design for a Waterloo trophy. Before this, however, he had been writing a series of architectural notes for Ackermann's Repository illustrated by coloured aquatints and in 1816 Ackermann decided to reprint in volume form those that described contemporary London. Intended as a limited edition for private circulation, the verso of the half-title has a printed line for the copy number (this copy unnumbered). 'The work consists of two sections, one on the state of the Turkish government in Damascus, and the other an account of the Christians in the Lebanon' (Blackmer). The Comte de Paris travelled in Syria in 1860. He was the son of the Duc d'Orleans. Chahine 3562; Blackmer 1226; Weber 584.

West Bay was the first series where Parr employed his now characteristic combination of a ring flash and a macro lens. The edition is stated as 250 copies, but according to the publisher, only 175 copies were completed as the bindery went into receivership during production.
