Description:
Tight, square, uncreased spine has some sunning. Clean, unmarked interior. A one-inch crease to the front cover at the foot, but no other notable shelf-wear. Paglia is supported by an all-star Italian-American cast in the production of this book, with a cover by typographic master Louise Fili featuring an image by fashion photographer and former Lauren Hutton–paramour Luca Babini. Fili first found her enthusiasm for design as a child, when she etched letterforms into her walls, and then taught herself calligraphy in her teens, using Bob Dylan lyrics as the inspiration for a hand-illuminated manuscript. She later discovered European modernists such as Lucian Bernhard and A.M. Cassandre, and in her mid-20s, became senior designer for Herb Lubalin before migrating to Random House's Pantheon Books, where her jacket for Marguerite Duras's The Lover cemented her success. A highlight of this collection is its Cartoon Personae Appendix, a typically egomaniacal and completely delightful testament to the…

Description:
Tight, square spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Some tanning to the end-sheets and light shelf-wear to both book and jacket. There is some fading to the jacket spine. Jacket design by Sue Richards. Carcanet Press's Lives & Letters series compiled essays and correspondence by writers such as I. A. Richards, William Gass, HD, Ezra Pound, and, of course, this hard-to-find one by Pasolini. Included is 'Gennariello', a series of letters the writer/director published in the popular newspaper, Corriere della Sera, in the months leading up to his brutal murder by a male prostitute (most likely at the behest of extortionists, the mafia, the Italian government, or some combination thereof). 'I consider a row to be also an exchange of knowledge,' Pasolini writes. 'One day I noticed that in the course of an effusion of affection a Neapolitan was taking my wallet; I drew his attention to it and our affection increased.' 129 pp.

Description:
Tight, square spine. Clean, unmarked interior. There are some areas of toning, light rubbing, and light edge-wear to the wraps. 'The words on the cover were the most important words in the book,' said Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who founded City Lights' Pocket Poet Series and designed most of its early covers while working out of his painting studio in San Francisco's Hunter's Point shipyard. Patchen had been a huge influence on Ferlinghetti, and this collection of poems celebrating the author's longtime muse, Miriam, is the second of his books the publisher chose to include in Pocket Poets (the first was Poems of Humor & Protest). The inspiration for the iconic series-wide design, which employs the oddly monumental typeface, Albertus, also came from Patchen, via his 1945 book, An Astonished Eye Looks Out of the Air. Designed by modernist architect Kemper Nomland, Jr., An Astonished Eye was first published by Untide Press, which was operated by William Everson (Brother Antoninus) out of Civilian Public…

Description:
Tight, square spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Some light wear to the covers, but a nice copy over all. Translated by Helen R. Lane. In 1951, at the age of 28, after a failed attempt at a career as a fine artist, Roy Kuhlman approached Grove Press's Barney Rosset to show him his portfolio. Rossett expressed disinterest, but as the artist began to put away his work, two abstract pieces he'd kept hidden slipped from a side pocket. The avant-garde publisher, impressed by these throwaways, reappraised his decision and decided to hire Kuhlman, who went on to design over 700 Grove covers. The following year, Rosset read an essay, written by a young translator named Richard Seaver, celebrating the then-unknown Samuel Beckett, leading to Rosset's decision to publish the Irish playwright and eventually hire Seaver. Seaver, who translated Pauline Réage/Anne Desclos's The Story of O, would go on to become Grove's editor in chief and would later launch the Arbor House imprint, Seaver Books, hiring former Grove…
