Description:
[Beijing: The Chinese Imperial Court, c.1790].. Original copper-engraving (50 x 86.7 cm, overall sheet 54 x 90.5 cm) showing the imperial reception of the victorious army and its commander, the military officer Fukang'an (d. 1796), from the extremely rare set of the Qianlong battle prints relating to the Taiwan Rebellion (1787-1788). Slight dust-soiling, small tear without loss and minor crease to right hand outer margin, generally very good. The Qianlong battle prints are a series of prints from copper engravings dating from the second half of the 18th century which provide an extremely interesting example of the interaction of Chinese and European artistic practices. The prints were commissioned by the Qianlong emperor of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), who ruled from 1735 to 1796, and depict his military campaigns - known as The Ten Great Campaigns (Shiquan Wugong) - in China's inner provinces and along the country's frontiers. Aux dépens de la Compagnie [1742]. First edition, large 12mo. 17 x 10.5cm. 2 vols bound in 1. Contemporary speckled calf, raised bands gilt in compartments, gilt-lettered labels. pp. (iv)+160+275 (verso blank); xxxii+(ii)+v (verso blank)+386. Front hinge cracked but sound, very small early ink stamp at foot of title. An early history of the Jesuits from their founding to Francis Xavier's arrival in China in 1552 and up to 1571. The work was intended to be complete in 4 volumes, but Quesnel died in 1774 before bringing the history of the Society up to date with their progress in Asia, Africa and the Americas. Vol. II contains a good descriptive section on China. A later manuscript note on the author's life and death covers the front endpaper.
