Dated 1928. In French (with separate translation) on card, folio, in fine condition. “What woman wants, God wants (and that god is not the god of war! Since the desire of all women is for peace ... let peace reign! A woman: Rachilde.” [translation] Rachilde was the nom de plume of Marguerite Vallette-Eymery (1860 – 1953), a French author. Dubbed “Mademoiselle Baudelaire” by Maurice Barres, she was called a pornographer by Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly. Rachilde and her husband, Alfred Vallette, were some of the most influential people in the symbolist and decadent community in Paris. They started the Mercure de France and hosted salons every Tuesday afternoon where young artists could come and meet established writers, such as Oscar Wilde who was inspired in part by Rachilde's book Monsieur Venus. A good example of the uncommon signature of John Radcliffe (1650-1714), physician and philanthropist, one of the most famous doctors of his time, who bequeathed the bulk of his large property to the Radcliffe Library, Infirmary and Observatory, all named after him, and to University College Oxford and St.Bartholomew’s Hospital in London.

Upper Norwood, undated. 1 page, with two lines and signature on the second leaf. In good condition, a few minor blemishes. Uncommon. Henrietta Rae (1859-1928) was a prominent English painter of the late Victorian era, who specialised in classical, allegorical and literary subjects. Her best-known painting is The Lady with the Lamp (1891); depicting Florence Nightingale at Scutari. She married the painter Ernest Normand in 1884. Rae was a supporter of feminism and women's suffrage. In 1897 Rae organised an exhibition of the work of female artists for the Jubilee of Queen Victoria.

Ravaisson's chief philosophical works are: "Les Fragments philosophiques de Hamilton" (in the Revue des Deux Mondes, November, 1840); Rapport sur le stoicisme (1851); La Philosophie en France au dix-neuvième siècle (1868; 3rd ed., 1889); Morale et métaphysique (1893). Eminent as a philosopher, Ravaisson was also an archaeologist, and contributed articles on ancient sculpture to the Revue Archéologique and the Mémoires de l'Académie des Inscriptions. In 1871 he published a monograph on the Venus de Milo.

A beautiful and energetic cosmopolitan who had enjoyed a broad European education, she was praised by Lord Byron in Beppo as "[one] whose bloom could, after dancing, dare the dawn". However, her outspoken Tory sympathies won her few friends among her husband's Liberal circle. Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux, described her as”that accursed woman”.

He became British minister in Persia (1859-60). Paris, postmarked 12 May 1894. In French. 1 page 6½ x 5 inches, in good condition, with the original franked envelope. Rare. Hugues Rebell (1867-1905), author, exponent of Nietsche. Rebell is often dismissed as a failed author of pornography, remembered for only one title, Les nuits chaudes du Cap Français (1902), which won the Prix Nocturne in 1966. Rebell wrote a number of pornographic works under the group pseudonym "Jean de Villiot", a prolific contributor to early 20th century French spanking literature, published by Charles Carrington. He was also a poet, whose Les Chants de la pluie et du soleil, dedicated to his friend René Boylesve, inspired André Gide in Les Nourritures Terrestres.
