Original publisher's gilt decorated white cloth, upper edges gilt, lower and outer edges uncut. 97 black and white full page illustrations, including head and tail pieces. Light shelfwear to covers, some spotting to edges and preliminary pages of both volumes, scattered light foxing throughout. Generally a very good set.

Doll to foot of spine of volume one, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Portrait and 12 engraved illustrations "avant la lettre" by Moreau. Ex libris Marie Louise Maxwell-Scott with her bookplate on front pastedown of vol. 1. Lady Marie was the second wife of Major General Sir Walter Maxwell-Scott, a descendant of the Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet Walter Scott. They lived at Abbotsford, the Scott family home. P. Doll, Parisian bookbinder active c.1808 to1826, clients included Napoléon. Intermittent foxing throughout, some wear to spine and joints, notably to head of spine of first volume, generally very good. Finely bound in recent blue half morocco with gilt titles and decorative fish to spine, over original publisher's boards with decorative titles stamped in gilt to upper; top edge gilt. Original pictorial end papers bound in to front. Contents clean. Discreet ink name to fly, exterior unmarked. A near fine copy. Using the text of the 1897 Bodley Head edition, being the text of the 1676 edition with modernised spellings.

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. 1935.. FIRST EDITION. 4to. pp.318. Original cloth, gilt, with pictorial dustwraper. 12 colour plates, dustwrapper and endpapers by Rackham. Wrapper very slightly spotted with light rubbing to extremities, spine lightly browned and head chipped, book binding itself very good with minimal rubbing to spine extremities, overall a very good copy.

Complete with its full complement of plates: the first two volumes containing 42 portraits ("Heads") and 22 plates of Tombs ("Monuments"), as listed plus 6 maps and 12 genealogical tables. The three volumes of the Continuation with 12 portraits, 32 plates of medals, 5 seals, 14 maps (map of France loosely inserted, supplied from a taller copy), 6 sea charts and 52 plates of Battles and Cities. Bindings rubbed, three joints cracked but still holding firm, contents generally very good. Third edition of the first two volumes, first edition of the last three.

Four vignette scenes, including those of Lahore and of Cootub Minar, Delhi. Decorative scrolling and title cartouche around the edges of the image. (Map 22 x 29.5 cm, overall sheet 27.5 x 36 cm). Original outline colour. Minor marginal soiling, not affecting map. For the Great Exhibition in 1851 John Tallis (1817-1876) worked with engraver John Rapkin (1815-1876) to publish the 'Illustrated World Atlas', whose maps were later re-issued by the London Printing and Publishing Company. Their maps are prized for their wonderful steel-engraved vignettes showing the peoples, customs, architecture, landmarks, flora, and fauna of each country.
