Picador. 8vo., brick-red publisher's boards lettered in silver to spine; pictorial dust-jacket with an illustration by Scott Garrett; pp. [vii], viii-xvi, [i], 2-319, [i]; containing numerous sketches and full-colour illustrations throughout; aside from very light creasing and a miniscule dent to the lower board, a fine copy. First edition, with full number line 1-9, signed and dated by the author to the title page in green ink pen. A collection of seven medical case histories by the renowned neurologist Oliver Sacks. Among those studied are: 'The Last Hippie' - concerning a man whose brain tumour means he has no memory of anything past the late 1960s. Sacks draws parallels here with the case of Phineas Gage, the American railroad worker who survived for eleven years after an accident in which a large iron rod was driven through his head. 'A Surgeon's Life' - the subject suffers from Tourette's syndrome, and in particular a series of ticks, which disappear when he… Read More

Webb & Bower. London: Webb & Bower (1989) large 8vo., Brown publisher's boards lettered in light black to spine; with a black printed motif to the centre of the upper board; unclipped dust wrapper (£14.95); pp. 190; a very good copy. Light handling wear to the dust wrapper edges. The book has mild compression to the corners. The upper text block edge has moderate foxing marks. First edition. Signed by the illustrator Peter Firmin underneath the frontispiece illustration and dated by him in the year of publication. In the corner of the same page he has inscribed "For oliver with love Peter". More likely, due to the warm inscription, it is to his long time bagpuss, noggin and clangers collaborator Oliver Postgate. Peter Firmin was commissioned with the task of illustrating Vita Sackville West's poetry from her titles The Land and The Garden. The book is profusely packed with his illustrations. With an introduction by Nigel Nicolson. . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1989.

The book itself is in excellent condition with no wear at all. It is square and firm. As nice a copy as you would find with this book. 2. The Day of the Scorpion (1968). A near fine copy. Price clipped. There is a patch of browning on the front free end paper. The boards have the odd light mark, otherwise again it is an excellent copy. 3. In it, a small group of survivors gather together on a beach in Southern Australia, awaiting the radioactive cloud rapidly approaching from the North, with each character dealing with the prospect of death in different ways. Originally published as a four-part series in The Sunday Graphic, Shute's concept was purportedly inspired both by his emigration to Australia, and the influence of T.S. Eliot, with the title taken from the poem The Hollow Men, which includes the lines:… Read More
