The value of this book lies in the images of rare papers photographed in private homes, providing a record of some designs now impossibly rare: a superlative resource for the study of eighteenth and early nineteenth-century design and interior decoration. 1903. Arguably the finest of the French satirical magazines and directly comparable with Germany's 'Simplicissimus'. Many of the finest graphic artists and caricaturists of the period are represented - Iribe, Caran d'Ache, Villon, Steinlen, Rabier, Camara, Kupka, Robida, Van Dongen, Willette, Poulbot, et cetera. From its first number [4 april 1901] 'L'Assiette au Beurre' "was recognised at home and abroad as something unusual - at once the hardest-hitting and the most visually compelling [magazine] of its type. ...The magazine, which continued until the fall of 1912, never ceased to strike out against the alleged crimes of the establishment, of the privileged few who had possession of the 'assiette au beurre'." [Stanley Appelbaum in the preface to the Dover Publication's anthology of 1978.] The satire is not only France-centred - England, Germany, Russia and others are frequently in its sights. Bound in contemporary quarter cloth and marbled boards, edges untrimmed. Very good copies.

Nineteen prints personally selected by Maurice Sendak for this collection of his all-time favourite artworks. All prints are housed in a beautiful box. An excellent copy in fine condition.

Jamieson Lane, Sydney: The Swift Print, 1913. First Edition. Tightly modelled after an historical novel of the same name by Nobel prize-winning author, Henryk Sienkiewicz, published in Poland in 1895, "Quo Vadis?" is set in Rome at the time of Emperor Nero's reign, circa 64 AD. Reported as being the most expensive production of this nature to date, in "Quo Vadis?" we see the dramatic enactment of cruel and violent public spectacles hosted in Nero's huge amphitheatre. Ravenous lions stalk sacrificial Christians blamed for the apocalyptic blaze in the burning of Rome. Heroine Lygia enters the stadium lashed against her will to the back of a mad bull. Aside from the historical interest in the relative value of prints this work is an invaluable biographical resource with information on a wide range of English and Continental engravers. Octavo, original gilt cloth, a little rubbed but still bright and attractive.

Sydney: Sunnybrook Press, no date. First Edition. Poem published by Australian poet and journalist, Kenneth Slessor (1901 -1971) in veneration of James Tyrell's wonderful old bookshop. "Broadsheets there are, of horrid hangman's tales; Yellow-stained maps from some forgotten book; Journals of convict years in New South Wales, And Captain Cook." [K.S.]. Single folded sheet, 250 mm x 153 mm, containing one printed poem, with an illustration of a seated monk reading, a very good example.

London: John Murray, 1871. First Edition. The surprisingly scarce first edition of this famous juvenile; Ferguson records only a later impression [Ferguson, 15755]. The attractive vignettes used as chapter-headings include rather good views of Melbourne and Sydney as well as Auckland, Honolulu and Niagara. Engaging travelogue filled with wonderful descriptions and adventures. Octavo, with steel-engraved illustrations; original green cloth binding, decorated in black and gilt, prize inscription dated 1872 on front frre endpaper, a good copy, joints rubbed.

London: David Bogue, 1849. Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier (1804-1866), pseudonym Gavarni, was a French master lithographer noted for his fashion and satirical illustrations. In 1847 he travelled to London and produced a series of images condemning the conditions of the English working-classes and urban poor, here used to illustrate a series of written descriptions by leading writers of the day. Quarto, original gilt cloth (expertly rebacked), all edges gilt, frontispiece, illustrated title-page and full-page plates throughout; cloth rubbed with some scattered marks, internally fine, a nice copy.

Melbourne: McLaren & Co, 1949. This beautiful facsimile surveys the work of Julian Smith (1873-1947), a respected surgeon and pioneering photographer in Australia. The rich tones of Smith's photographs, predominately character studies and portraits of prominent civil servants and individuals, were attained using a special printing technique developed by the artist. Fifty black & white plates, loosely inserted in pictorial portfolio with ribbon tie and Smith's portrait on the upper board; folio pamphlet with a tipped-in colour portrait of Smith; original stiff card portfolio with metal clasp; front of pamphlet wrapper sunned, and some wear to outer portfolio, but plates in fine condition.

Includes an article on wood engraving by Frank Medworth, extracts from Donald Friend's war dairy, and letters on the role of art in social reconstruction after the war. Denmark, 1880. Very good. Charming children's exercise book with engraved illustrated covers depicting a group of five kangaroos titled "Kaempekaenguru". This idyllic bushland scene, complete with a joey and its mother and two emus in the distance, comprises the entire rear cover of the booklet (a serene contrast to the front cover depicting a group of hyenas fighting over a kill). Both engraved covers are signed "F. Specht"; Friedrich Specht (1839-1909) was a German natural history illustrator who produced images for both popular and scientific publications. Slim lined booklet, writing exercises completed in a cursive hand, original decorated wrapperss, very good.
