Description:
White endpapers, but text pages somewhat yellowed because of poor paper. 8 glossy pages of b/w photos. SIGNED by Author on title page without inscription. From the d.j. flap: "As NBC-TV signed off from the 1955 U.S. Open that Saturday in June, the network declared that the legendary Ben Hogan has just won his record fifth U.S. Open. They had forgotten about Jack Fleck, a relatively unknown thirty-three-year-old pro and former caddie from Iowa who was playing the golf of his life. Fleck overcame a 9-shot deficit over the final 54 holes--a record that stands to this day--and tied Hogan by sinking a pressure-packed putt on the final hole of regulation. The two men then squared off the following day in an 18-hole playoff in which Fleck bested his idol to claim the Open title in one of the most startling upsets in sports history."

Description:
From the d.j.: "Ships and Memories is a fascinating account of the life at sea during the age of steam. Seafarers tell their own stories and remember the good times as well as the bad, in peace and war and during the depression. The author draws on interviews with master mariners, cooks, stewards and others who worked aboard steamships from 1920 to 1950." "In language charged with passion, nostalgia, and, at times, bitterness, they recall the dangers of seafaring, the lonelinness aboard ship, and the difficulty of supporting families ashore, but they also remember, with earthy humour, the rowdy adventures in port."

Description:
From Page 3: "Chapter 1: the Eastchurch Squadron Takes a Hand. After a period spent on the East Coast of England carrying out patrols against possible air attacks, my unit of the R.N.A.S. was ordered to proceed overseas, to co-operate with a Brigade of Royal Marines who were to occupy Ostend.
My Squadron was composed practically in toto from the R.N. Flying school at Eastchurch, which had been under my command since its start in 1912. The majority of the pilots were Eastchurch officers, and all the mechanics and working-party were from the same unit. They were all active R.N. ratings, who had joined the R.N.A.'s, and had been with me, some since 1911, the rest since 1912 and 1913.
As regards personnel, therefore, my Squadron had the advantage of high esprit de corps, and that mutual feeling of self-confidence engendered by some years of mutual work in aviation."
A nice, easy style of writing by Samson, and I can see why his book became very popular.

Description:
Attractive endpapers. 11 tipped-in colour plates as well as many b/w photos on glossy paper. 3rd printing but an upgrade from former editions. From the Editorial Foreword: "In the present edition we have availed ourselves of the opportunity of adding still further to the usefulness and value of the work by making considerable additions to the various lists of plants, bulbs, shrubs, etc., suitable for cultivation on the rockery, in the Moraine, also in the Bog, Water Garden, the cold Greenhouse, and the Frame. Many new illustrations in monochrome and colour have likewise been added. It is, therefore, hoped that these additional features will render the work of still greater value as a thorough and up-to-date guide to the proper construction of Rock, Water, Bog, and Moraine Gardens, and also the successful cultivation of the countless gems of alpine and lowland flora adapted for such purposes."

With stunning images and words, this book tells the Muskwa-Kechika story--a story of nature and human nature, and how people of divergent interests found common ground, and with understanding and cooperation, agreed to protect an uncommon wilderness forever." Many breath-taking photos taken by the author. "Wayne's love of this land has inspired him to work as an environmental representaive since 1999 and as a full-time environmental advocate since 1993. Description:
From the d.j. flap: "HUCK SCARRY": I was born in 1953. Just like my father, I was always drawing, and I attended a graphic arts school in Switzerland. Often I would assist Dad when it came to colouring up his finished drawings. So, after my father's passing in 1994, I decided to continue creating new books for his charming and funny characters.Recently, I came across sketches done by my father for a book centred around Lowly Worm, but never published. So the book you are holding was written and sketched by my father, and finished and coloured by me! Oh, and I live in the little chalet in Gstaad, as well as in Vienna, with my family.

Description:
This is the 1st Edition of "What can you do with a shoe?" to have full-colour illustrations by Maurice Sendak. From the d.j. flap: "What can you do with a shoe? You can put it on your ear or wear it on your head or butter it like bread or use apple jam instead! What can you do with a hat? You can fill it up with pickles or with popcorn or with glue. An octopus could rest in it, a turtle be a guest in it. Or would a horse look best in it? These are samples of the questions and wonderfully silly, laugh-provoking answers in a game played by a little girl and boy dressed up in their parents' clothes."
