1st Edition copy. Partial loss of Red lettering at top of spine, as well as some loss to "Houghton Mifflin Co." in Red at bottom of spine. Some wrinkling of spine covering as well, but no loss to the Black portion of the spine nor to the front and rear boards. Title and author on the front board with no loss of the Red lettering, very clean and bright. Corners slightly bumped but very little loss. Paper throughout a little yellowed but standing up well for its 93 years of age. Fans of Sabatini would be happy with this original volume.

The complete 8 colour plates wonderfully executed by artist Frances Beem, as well as 28 small b/w illustrations throughout the text, and 2 other small b/w drawings, one on the title page and one on the copyright page. Minor rubbing to boards but really not an issue for a children's book of this vintage. Ditto for the 5 or 6 brown spots in margins and one small loss of margin paper on pages 71-72.
Frances Beem was an early 20th-century American author and illustrator of children's books. Born: May 5, 1881. Died November 10, 1971 (age 90 years)

After a period spent on the East Coast of England carrying out patrols against possible air attacks, my unit of the R.N.A.S. was ordered to proceed overseas, to co-operate with a Brigade of Royal Marines who were to occupy Ostend.
My Squadron was composed practically in toto from the R.N. Flying school at Eastchurch, which had been under my command since its start in 1912. The majority of the pilots were Eastchurch officers, and all the mechanics and working-party were from the same unit. They were all active R.N. ratings, who had joined the R.N.A.'s, and had been with me, some since 1911, the rest since 1912 and 1913.

From the d.j. flap: "HUCK SCARRY": I was born in 1953. Just like my father, I was always drawing, and I attended a graphic arts school in Switzerland. Often I would assist Dad when it came to colouring up his finished drawings. So, after my father's passing in 1994, I decided to continue creating new books for his charming and funny characters.
Recently, I came across sketches done by my father for a book centred around Lowly Worm, but never published. So the book you are holding was written and sketched by my father, and finished and coloured by me! Oh, and I live in the little chalet in Gstaad, as well as in Vienna, with my family.

Pickle the pony and Patch the pup were the best of friends who played together every day. But, it was always Patch who decided what they would do. Rabbit and Mouse spend the winter with Bear in his cave, telling him wonderful but untrue stories of how they can fly and the things they have seen. Black remainder mark on bottom page edges, not affecting the boards. Both the author and the illustrator live in Switzerland.
