Description:
Very good. Square octavo scrapbook with blank page mounts. Most images loosely mounted, while perhaps 25 are laid-in at rear (about 97 images total). The images are albumen photographic prints, most of which are in fine condition, and labeled on rear or below the images where mounted. Generally, most prints are in fine condition, though many of those laid-in at rear are curled and creased. Most are wuite nicely composed, and whoever took them had a decent command of composition, and knew how to use the equipment. There is an image of a New York City fire engine (elaborate brass, etc.), pulled by horses. The shot taken on a busy, bright day on Broadway shows plenty of pedestrians, horses, and carriages, and not a whiff of an automobile. This album dates from no later than 1890, and is likely closer to the mid-1870s.

Description:
Southington, CT: Hazard, 1890. Very good. One cabinet card, measuring about 6.5" x 4.25". Though the mount is meant for a portrait-oriented image, this photograph is in oblong format. Some spotting to the edges of the photograph, but still a clear image, on a clean mount - overall very good. The image depicts an adult woman with clearly deformed hands and arms, and possibly without legs. There is a large hand-cranked metal device connected to a series of ropes, which are tied to parts of the mattress. The device must have served the purpose of moving the mattress so that she could sit up or lay down. An interesting cabinet photograph with interesting medical and technology content.

Description:
[no place given - Niagara Falls?], 1910. Album. Very good +. One small photograph album, in green cloth, measuring about 5" x 3", containing fourteen silver print photographs, eight of which measure about 3.5" x 2.75", and six of which measure 2.5" x 1.75". A few nicks to the first image, and the glue used to attach them to the paper has caused the images to curl, though not affecting the overall condition or quality of the prints. Overall, very good or better. The images mostly depict a group of six women in full Suffragette-era attire, with long skirts and hats, posing somewhat unceremoniously for a few photographs, our personal favorite being in full Niagara Falls rainwear, which covers everything but the middle of their faces. The presence of a streetcar, a train of horses, but no automobiles, leads us to place this album conservatively at about 1910, though it could be as early as the mid-1890s, as Niagara Falls's streetcar system began in the 1880s. Though a…

Description:
1920. Flexible boards. Very good. Octavo, unpaginated (about 100pp.). A blank ruled notebook, bound in limp black cloth, measuring about 4.5" x 7" (11cm x 18cm). 64 leaves used, either in whole or in part. On each of those leaves is pasted a number of seals, labels, or blindstamps for various businesses, most of which are located in England, Scotland, or Wales. These were arranged alphabetically, with blank leaves between each letter. The seals are generally in very good condition, though the pages have some waviness, probably from the glue used to affix them. We have not endeavored to do a total count, but, averaging more than ten to a page, there are, very conservatively, at least 750 labels in this volume. There are notable concentrations in Glasgow, Paisley, Belfast, Manchester, Dundee, and a few other cities, all of which were early centers of the Industrial Revolution in the United Kingdom (in addition to a handful of continental European businesses). While there are a number of labels, there…

Description:
[mostly Block Island, Rhode Island], 1919. Very good +. Group of 77 photographs, nearly all measuring about 3.5" x 5.5" (including white borders). Photographs mostly in excellent condition, some with a few corner chips, but mostly clean and bright. Perhaps a dozen of the images have captions on the verso, most of which read something like, "June 1919. Under running Block Island submarine cable with U. S. S. Palmer." The U. S. S. Palmer was renamed U. S. S. SP-319 that very year, but likely its crew still called it the "Palmer." Initially built as a fishing vessel, it began working on and laying cables in 1917. The photographs herein mostly document in close-up detail the various activities involved in moving, splicing, and laying cable. A number of the photographs may date to slightly later than the "Palmer" photographs (which are the only ones with captions). Nevertheless, they seem to be in the same or a very simliar area. A torn envelope that once housed…

Description:
1920. Good +. One oblong octavo-size photograph album, containing just over 100 sepia-toned photographs of various sizes (mostly smaller than a Polaroid). Overall in good or better condition, as most photographs are mounted to the album and have some waviness from glue and moisture. Most are family portraits and shapshots, likely from a rural Illinois family based on some clues in the images and scant notations. Of particualr interest, however, are sixteen images depicting military outposts and units in New Mexico, West Texas and possibly Mexico, during the Mexican Expedition of 1916. Two images are labeled "in the field in Mexico," while others depict soldiers in camp, cleaning their packs, tendings to horses, etc.

Description:
1920. Near fine. An octavo-sized photograph album, containing 55 images, each about 2.5" x 4.5", depicting a vacation to Yellowstone and some similar locales. Ladies fashions, while mostly covered by coats, seem to indicate a mid-1920s date, possibly as late as 1932 or 1933. All images are in excellent condition, fresh and bright, while mounted into corners, attached with a sparing amount of glue. Some handwritten labels in the thin borders indicate several attrations, including Old Faithful, the Canyon Hotel, Peigan Pass in Glacier Park, St. Mary's Lake (with one shot taken on a steamboat), and several others, including two close-ups of a bear. There is a delightful mix of candid portraits and sweeping views, and the photographer (in this cataloguer's opinion) had some real acuity with the camera.

Description:
1975. Very good -. Eight photographic prints, each about 11" x 14" (three in landscape and five in portrait orientation), depicting firefighters putting out a fire, likely in an urban area of Northeast Ohio (Cleveland, Akron, or Youngstown); one depicting train tracks, and a close-up portrait of a woman. There are three sets of two images each that are almost identical, but have one or two small differences - they were probably taken seconds or milliseconds apart. Condition is overall about very good. They are somewhat curled on the sides, and there are a few thin creases and trivial nicks and closed tears. Overall, however, the images are clear and bright. The photographer was probably an amateur, but may have submitted some of these photographs to newspapers.

Description:
[Utah?]: [artist and printer unknown], 1880. Fine. One photographic print, mounted to thick cardboard. Print measures 8.75" x 6.5", and the mount measures 12" x 10". The shot itself is slightly overexposed, but the photograph is in fine condition. The mount only has a hint of corner wear. The photograph depicts a group of about 32 (white) men in uniforms, with many in thicker coats and also hats made from animal skins. Most have a mug of coffee in their hands. Mules and horses are in the background, as is a wagon and a teepee. On the rear is written in pencil the simple words: "Out after the Ute Indians," with no further explanation or attribution. The group is very much at ease, and only half-posing for the shot. If this cataloguer had to choose one period that this image might date from, taking the pencil caption at face value, it would be the period right after the "Meker Massacre," known as the "Ute War," in the early Fall of 1879. However, their…
