Originally the articles were a course of magazine series from November 1884-1887. The original suggestion (based upon the success of two articles from different points of view on the John Brown raid, in "The Century" for mont) was of eieght or ten articles of decisive battles of war, and included Editor-in-Chie, at once cordially adopted the suggestion, committing the charge of its execution to Mr. Johnson, the associate editor assisted by Mr. Buel.These volumes are the product of a natural sequence of the magazine series.Nicolay and Hay's Life of Lincoln (1886-87) increased the monthly issue of the magazine and proved great interest in the history of Civil War. These volumes are an incredible account of the Civil War Generals, Soldiers, and Presidents and all who were part of it.
