Title very thin in two patches (possibly paper flaws) causing some small holes but not affecting text, paper flaw causing a hole in the final leaf but again not affecting text, a little light toning and a few spots. Contemporary vellum with MS title to spine. Evidence of a bookplate having been removed from the front paste-down, lacks ffep, smudges and a few stains to vellum but very good overall. Anton van Dale (1638-1708) made his living first as a merchant, then as a physician. While working he simultaneously studied classical languages, eventually becoming a Latin scholar of some standing. He was for a while a Mennonite preacher, but was said to have resigned his role because his sermons, heavily laced with Greek and Latin, failed to appeal to his audience. Nineteenth-century dark calf, boards bordered with a double gilt rule enclosing a single gilt rule frame with floral cornerpieces, spine gilt in compartments with central urn tools and corner swags, red morocco label, fourth compartment gilt-lettered direct. Some spotting, title-page a little soiled. Extremities just slightly rubbed, a few light scuffs to boards. Modern bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to front pastedown. According to Willems, this is the best of the five Elzevir editions of Velleius Paterculus. Willems 1550.

Van Bleyswyk. Woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, 2nd title-page to vol.II. Pencilled code at head of title-page, light foxing becoming heavier, quite toned from gathering 3P onward, occasional small inkblots. Contemporary vellum prize binding, gilt spine, gilt frame, gilt corner pieces and centrepiece with arms of Utrecht to each board, edges lightly sprinkled red and blue. Some greyish marks but generally clean, rear joint a little weak, ties lost, without ffep, very good. Title-page in red and black, woodcut initials. Internally very clean. Contemporary vellum, title inked to spine, central gilt coat of arms of Arnhem to boards, ties intact. A little dusty, very good indeed. With MS prize on verso of ffep, to Jacobus Rau, 6th November 1812. Dibdin finds this second edition 'very excellent' and notes its 'considerable improvements' on the first. He observes that it "contain[s] the pure text of the editio princeps, and the best notes of all the preceding editors." Dibdin II 525; Schweiger II 1129; Spoelder 2.

Uniformly bound in quarter red morocco with marbled boards, spines with raised bands, gilt lettered and patterned. Marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Shelf-wear to edges with fraying and slight loss to some corners, raised bands rubbed but otherwise spines bright and tidy: still a handsome set. Viollet-le-Duc's great Dictionary of Medieval and Renaissance French Architecture, reflecting his Gothic inclination. First published in ten volumes between 1854 and 1868, but here, as often, in a reissue of slightly later mixed dates.

But binding sound and text clean: still a good and useful copy.

Parisiis [Paris]: Ex Typographia Firminorum Didot, 1858. 12mo, pp. [iv], xvi, 470, [2]. Title-page with engraved border, text printed within red ruled borders, 24 albumen photographic prints mounted as headpieces. Contemporary red morocco, boards bordered with a triple gilt rule enclosing a frame of a triple gilt rule with gilt cornerpieces, within this a decorative gilt lozenge tool, spine elaborately gilt in compartments, second compartment gilt-lettered direct, gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Paper lightly toned and foxed. Extremities a little rubbed, a tiny chip to foot of spine and a bump to head of front board. A companion volume to the 1855 Didot Horace, one of the first books to be illustrated with photographs. Like the Horace, this Virgil contains headpieces that photographically reproduce paintings; an alternate issue was also produced with engravings instead reproducing the same images.

Some light browning to first and last leaves, occasional minor dustsoiling. Rubbed and scratched, extremities worn, label lost, front joint cracking but sound. Ownership stamp of Charles Hatchett to verso of title-page. Gaskell 673; ESTC T126176.

Londini [London]: Impensis Kearsley, 1796. LARGE PAPER COPY, 2 vols., 8vo, pp. [iv], 274, [34]; [iv], 301, [27]. First and last leaf of vol. 2 blank. Contemporary marbled calf, boards bordered with a gilt roll, spines divided by gilt rolls, red and green morocco labels, marbled endpapers, edges yellow. Some light spotting and soiling. Neatly rebacked preserving original spines, corners a touch worn, some light scratches to boards. Bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to front pastedown of vol. 1. The luxuriously-margined large-paper issue of the scholar and controversialist Gilbert Wakefield's (1756-1801) edition of Virgil, part of a frantic run of work to support himself following his resignation from Hackney College. Despite the haste involved in his rate of output, his classical editions 'established Wakefield as one of the two leading British scholars of his time, the other being Richard Porson' (ODNB). Leovardiae [Leeuwarden]: excudit Franciscus Halma, 1717. 2 vols., 4to, pp. [ccxxxiv], 717, [1] + frontispiece; [ii], [719]-1308, [192]. Contemporary blind-panelled vellum, spines lettered in ink. A little light spotting and soiling. Bindings strained at front hinges, flyleaf of vol. I almost detached, vellum somewhat soiled and marked, spines darkened. Masvicius's sumptuously-illustrated edition of Virgil, "held in estimation by scholars of no mean fame" (Dibdin). It includes a large index to Servius. Dibdin remarked on the book, "the notes of the old commentators, placed under the text, are sometimes curious and amusing", and "the punctuation of the text differs considerably from what is commonly received: but this is a subject on which the greatest literary figures will disagree". Birminghamiae [Birmingham]: typis Joannis Baskerville, 1757. First edition. 4to, pp. [x], 103, [ii], 105-231, 233-432 (errors in pagination as usual). With initial blank and list of subscribers. Occasional extremely faint spotting but very clean overall. Contemporary tan speckled calf, spine gilt with raised bands and red morocco label, edges red. Joints split but boards holding firm, some crackling to spine, but sound. Headcaps worn and chipped, some scuffs and scrapes, corners worn, some evidence of a bookplate having been removed from the front pastedown, but still a good, sound copy. The position of the 'J' of 'Johannis' between the 'B' and 'I' of 'Birminghamiae' on the line above identifies this copy as a first edition in accordance with Gaskell, who defines it as 'Baskerville's first and perhaps his finest book', and cites Renouard's judgement of it as 'the most beautiful and the most sought-after of Baskerville's quarto… Read More

Publisher's catalogue to final leaf. Occasional light spotting, internally very good. Simple contemporary vellum, title inked to spine, very slim boards, edges lightly sprinkled brown. Pencil note, 'edition de Burmann' to front paste-down, illegible ownership inscription in blue pen to ffep. A little greyed but very good. Dibdin omits this 1784 8vo edition, citing only the 1758 12mo and the 1788 folio, which are described as 'very correct and beautiful' and 'printed in a correct and magnificent manner' respectively.
