On the lower margin, the photograph and photographer are identified, "The Queen - Balmoral, G. W, Wilson, Aberdeen [Photographer]." Docketed on verso in pencil is the date of the photograph, "1863," and identification of the man attending the Queen: "John Brown, Gillie [favorite servant], after Prince Albert's death, became Queen's regular attendant in the Highlands. Docketing on verso states the photograph was taken at "Osborne House, July 1897." The gelatin silver print is attached to the cover of a photography bifold board and also held in place with three pieces of age-stained tape. The photograph is framed with the top board on which Vishniac has signed in pencil near the image opening at lower right, "R. Vishniac." The photograph measures 5.25 x 7 inches laid onto an 11 1/4 x 8 inch bifold board. The tape is well hidden by the signed cover mat. Uncommon image. Autograph

While acting in the Broadway production of "Arsenic and Old Lace," Von Stroheim writes to his daughter-in-law. He refers to the play towards the end of the letter. "We opened last night & as you can see from the criticism it went over allright (sic)." Von Stroheim played the role of the villain, Jonathan Brewster, after Boris Karloff left the play. He addresses his daughter-in-law as "Poopsie." She was the wife of his son Josef (1922-2002) a sound editor who started out in photography. Von Stroheim offers advice to "Poopsie" after noting his birthday present to her should arrive in time. "I am so glad about your advancement & I hope you'll keep up your interest in your work - particulairly [sic] now that you are in the Publicity Dept. I know - I just feel that you will make good because you are bright & unspoiled. Just don't associate with punk kids who might get you into trouble.
