Between 1915 and 1946, some ten thousand men were put to work in western Canada's national parks. They were the country's unwanted--unskilled foreign workers, the jobless and the homeless, conscientious objectors, perceived enemies of the state, and prisoners of war. These men had committed no crimes, but because of war or depression, they were seen as a possible threat to public order and a potential source of civil unrest. The Canadian government consequently sent them to the parks--world-renowed places such as Banff, Jasper, and Yoho--where they were held under duress in isolated work camps for months, sometimes years. One small stain at top of front d.j. panel (unobtrusive). A most interesting story of a collection of 37 photographs borrowed from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's London headquarters in the late 1940's by the American explorer, writer and film-maker, Amos Burg. They were returned to the RNLI headquaters in Poole 52 years later by Charles Campbell, a friend of Burg. This book treats each photograph from the "lost" collection as an individual chapter, supported by a narrative description of the rescue depicted.

A classic Classic. All edges gilt; gold lettering on spine and front board; silk moire endpapers, and satin bookmark. Also included are Charles Cotton's "Instructions, How to Angle for a Trout or Grayling in a Clear Stream". Douglas Gorsline labored for over a year on the twelve full-page copper etchings; then took several more months to create the forty supplementary wash drawings. The result is a sumptuous book to sit proudly on your bookshelf.

When the Captain's wife went into town to shop and maybe get a puppy, she couldn't resist bringing the biggest puppy home...at least part Newfie and as big as advertised. The Captain's wife named the dog Molly and took her home to the lighthouse. Her husband wasn't very happy when Molly ate up almost everything she found in the house. The next day there was a big storm and the Captain and his wife heard someone out on the water yelling for help. The Captain jumped into his rowboat but the motor wouldn't start. SPLASH! Molly leaped into the water and soon came back with a man clinging to her back. After that, Molly was known as the Lighthouse Dog and even received a life-saving medal from the Mayor.

Mr. Cinnamon Bear arrived in Cosy Hollow, found a house to live in and immediately put up a sign declairing that he was an inventor and odd-job bear. Though his heart is in the right place, Mr. Cinnaman's techniques sometimes backfire; but his good intentions always manage to save the day. Whoever would have thought a cinnamon bear in blue overalls would have such an impact on an average little animal town. 9 stories in all.

Would be a VG+ copy except (in a certain light) you can see that something has spilled on the topedges and foredges--not immediately noticeble, but there nonetheless; not affecting the margins of the pages. I was going to ask $37.50 but I feel I should not offer this item for no more than $25.00.

The History Committee, St. Andrews and Caledonian Society. Seemingly a well-researched book on the emergence of 3 Scots in what became British Columbia, 3 Northwest fur company explorers: Alexander Mackenzie, Simon Fraser and map-maker David Thompson. Then in 1811, two traders from the tiny Pacific Fur Company came north from Fort Okanagan and stopped in Kamloops; Scots Alexander Ross and David Stuart. In 1812, Alexander Ross returned to Kamloops and built a small trading post for the Pacific Fur company. Soon the Hudson's Bay company moved in and the rest is history.
On the title-page: "Compliments of the Kamloops and St. Andrews Society", plus the signature of an early owner of the book; o/w a VG+ copy.

In 1956, Orson Welles was staying in St.-Tropez and he began working with watercolor, crayon, ink and gouache, sketching and painting on whatever paper he had on hand to create an illustrated retelling of the Bravade, the festival held every year on St. Tropez's saint's day. Welles writes to his daughter (living with his ex-wife Rita Hayworth) saying "I kept thinking of you, and wishing you could be seeing it too. I've prepared this little picture book to give an idea what it was like." From the d.j.: "Welles called his little book Les Bravades and gave it to Rebecca for Christmas. Creaated with the eye of a director and the hand of an artist, it is now meticulously published to preserve the spirit of the original."
