Description:
From the front flap of the d.j.: "Park Prisoners tells the fascinating story of the labour camps that existed in western Canada's national parks between 1915 and 1946, where thousands of men spent months, even years, toiling in harsh conditions, isolated from the outside world. The book also brings together the rich photographic record of the park internee experience. A lively text is complemented by more than 125 archival photographs that reveal how the men lived and worked, what they created, and, tellingly, what little physical evidence of the camps remains today."
One of two copies I have listed; this one slightly inferior to my other copy.

Description:
'Park Prisoners' tells the startling and little-known history of the labour camps that once existed in Canada's mountain and prairie national parks. Between 1915 and 1946, some ten thousand men were put to work in western Canada's national parks. They were the country's unwanted--unskilled foreign workers, the jobless and the homeless, conscientious objectors, perceived enemies of the state, and prisoners of war. These men had committed no crimes, but because of war or depression, they were seen as a possible threat to public order and a potential source of civil unrest. The Canadian government consequently sent them to the parks--world-renowed places such as Banff, Jasper, and Yoho--where they were held under duress in isolated work camps for months, sometimes years. Here is the comprehensive, illustrated history of the national park labour camp story."

One small stain at top of front d.j. panel (unobtrusive). A most interesting story of a collection of 37 photographs borrowed from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's London headquarters in the late 1940's by the American explorer, writer and film-maker, Amos Burg. They were returned to the RNLI headquaters in Poole 52 years later by Charles Campbell, a friend of Burg. This book treats each photograph from the "lost" collection as an individual chapter, supported by a narrative description of the rescue depicted.

Description:
"Chapter 1: the beginning--Italian Operations in the Mediterranean. This is the story of the brave men who worked alone, under the water. Some wore fantastic-looking, rubber suits with great webbed feet, some walked, or crawled on the muddy bottoms of harbours in complete darkness, looking for mines, some bestrode torpedoes--the "Charioteers" they were called, some slipped through the black waters in midget submarines. They worked alone, in the dark, in enemy waters, in the dark, in enemy waters. When they started on a mission they knew that the chances were that they had taken a one-way ticket, that there might be no return. That grim knowledge went with deep down in hostile waters. Gut is was a forgotten knowledge, stored on one side, completely subjugated to thoughts of "attack," and their determination to cripple the enemy, no matter what the hazards or the cost."
"The first shot in this new method of warfare was no reverberating explosion, no column of water was hurled skywards. There was a… Read More

SIGNED by author Waldron and illustrator Deborah Turney Zagwyn on the half-title page. From the d.j. flap: "A Winter's Yarn is the very essence of a child's imaginings. What could be more natural on a winter's day than to wonder 'What do animals do when it's cold at the zoo?' When a child sets out to learn the answer, he encounters an extraordinaty zookeeper who promises a tour. And what a surprising tour it turns out to be as she shows off the special ways she deals with her animals' icy toes and shivering shanks."

Description:
Info from the back cover: "Love at First Sight" tells the engaging story of how a white Canadian and a black American met in the early 1950's, married, and raised a family in Canada, all against the backdrop of the American civil rights movement. Bert was a young white woman ready to take on the world, travelling on her own from Vancouver to Toronto and back again, supporting herself and finding friends and fun at every turn. Si was a young black man, raised in Memphis, Tennessee, who came to Canada to take a summer job as a porter for the CPR--and stayed. At the Cozy spost, one of Vancouver's many after-hours clubs of the 1950s era, their eyes met. "In that moment", writes Bert, "I heard no sound, had no feeling of place, just the purest sense of happiness I had ever known. I knew in my heart and mind that he was the one!" They married and lived in Port Coquitlam, B.C., building their DIY home and raising six children.

The Captain's wife named the dog Molly and took her home to the lighthouse. Her husband wasn't very happy when Molly ate up almost everything she found in the house. The next day there was a big storm and the Captain and his wife heard someone out on the water yelling for help. The Captain jumped into his rowboat but the motor wouldn't start. SPLASH! Molly leaped into the water and soon came back with a man clinging to her back. After that, Molly was known as the Lighthouse Dog and even received a life-saving medal from the Mayor.

Description:
From the d.j. flap: "In this collection of articles, Norman Webster takes readers on a journey through his 50 years of newspapering--in Canada, China in the early 1970's, the UK of Maggie Thatcher, and around the world. It's old-style reporting from a journalist with a sharp eye for the absurd. As a renowned editor of 'The Globe and Mail' and 'The Montreal Gazette', Webster writes about some of the big issues in Canada, such as the Quebec 'neverendum', the sovereignty debate that consumed the province and the country for three decades. Unlike so many political players in the world today, he is thoughtful and measured in his analysis. His book is entertaining and inspiring for readers of politics, and for journalists looking for award-winning examples of international reporting and editorial columns."

The History Committee, St. Andrews and Caledonian Society. Seemingly a well-researched book on the emergence of 3 Scots in what became British Columbia, 3 Northwest fur company explorers: Alexander Mackenzie, Simon Fraser and map-maker David Thompson. In 1812, Alexander Ross returned to Kamloops and built a small trading post for the Pacific Fur company. Soon the Hudson's Bay company moved in and the rest is history.

In 1956, Orson Welles was staying in St.-Tropez and he began working with watercolor, crayon, ink and gouache, sketching and painting on whatever paper he had on hand to create an illustrated retelling of the Bravade, the festival held every year on St. Tropez's saint's day. Welles writes to his daughter (living with his ex-wife Rita Hayworth) saying "I kept thinking of you, and wishing you could be seeing it too. I've prepared this little picture book to give an idea what it was like." From the d.j.: "Welles called his little book Les Bravades and gave it to Rebecca for Christmas. Creaated with the eye of a director and the hand of an artist, it is now meticulously published to preserve the spirit of the original."
