London, Chapman and Hall, 1854. Small 8vo (19.0 x 12.0 cm). x, 155 pp., engraved, tissue-guarded frontispiece and seven engraved plates. Publisher's dark blue blind-stamped cloth with gilt title on the spine and gilt vignette (a mayfly) on the front board. Yellow endpapers. = The pseudonym "Clericus" suggests that the author belonged to the clergy. He is generally believed to be the reverend William Cartwright. A nicely illustrated work with a large appendix which includes, for instance, a "Life of flies from March to September". This part with a few pencilled marginalia. Small private library label of Alan John Jarvis on the front pastedown. Some rubbing to the board and sopine edges, a bit cocked, some scattered foxing, otherwise in very good condition. By relating his equation of state with the Second Law of Thermodynamics, in the form first proposed by Willard Gibbs, he was able to arrive at a graphical representation of his mathematical formulations in the form of a surface which he called Psi surface following Gibbs, who used this Greek letter for the free energy of a system with different phases in equilibrium." (Wikipedia). This is an uncut and unmarked copy of the "Archives", with the 'van der Waals contribution on pp. 1-56. Uncut, with the widest possible margins. Disbound. = An intersting account, with a very detailed map, of the Panamian isthmus, the place where 50 years after this publication the Panama Canal was opened. Wagner included a narrative of his travel from Germany to Panama. From p. 21 onwards he mentions the importance of his study for digging a canal through the isthmus. Published as Ergänzungsheft 5 of Petermann's Geographische Mitteilungen. Some spotting, but in all a good, complete copy.

Green speckled edges. = An important botanical work after Linnaeus. This is the second, enlarged edition. Including a very large name index and the folding table, opposite p. lxviii. Göran, or Georg, Wahlenberg (1780-1851) was a Swedish naturalist. He "...received his doctorate in Medicine in 1806, was appointed botanices demonstrator in 1814, and professor of medicine and botany in 1829, succeeding Carl Peter Thunberg. He was the last holder of the undivided chair that in the previous century had been held by Linnaeus" (Wikipedia). Gilt title on the spine. = In the third paper, the author describes the last two papers as "instalment[s] of the rough draft for the handbook on the birds of Ceylon". That work was published in 1925 but does not contain all the data presented here. The first paper is mainly on distribution of bird genera, then (and now) occurring on Ceylon in time and space. All three works are published in Spolia Zeylanica, the bulletin of the Ceylon Museum, volume 10, together with several other contributions to the natural history of what is now Sri Lanka. Joints rubbed, otherwise very good. Rare.
