Publisher's dark blue blind-stamped cloth with gilt title on the spine and gilt vignette (a mayfly) on the front board. Yellow endpapers. = The pseudonym "Clericus" suggests that the author belonged to the clergy. He is generally believed to be the reverend William Cartwright. A nicely illustrated work with a large appendix which includes, for instance, a "Life of flies from March to September". This part with a few pencilled marginalia. Small private library label of Alan John Jarvis on the front pastedown. Some rubbing to the board and sopine edges, a bit cocked, some scattered foxing, otherwise in very good condition. Original, uniform printed wrappers. = The complete first three parts of a series written by the German palaeontologist Wilhelm Heinrich "William" Waagen (1841-1900) on Permian faunas from present-day Pakistan, which comprises of seven parts on fish and various invertebrate groups. This section contains the fish, and all molluscs (gastropods, bivalves, scaphopods, cephalopods). The plates show numerous fossils, most of which are new. in the second volume, number "2" was used insted of the more logical "ii". Uncut. Edges a bit worn. Small stamp "don de M. Original printed front cover bound in. = Rare early work on the palaeontology of the Jura (mountain chain between France and Zwitserland), and hence of the Jurassic period. Written by the German geologist and palaeontologist Wilhelm Heinrich Waagen (1841-1900) who also contributed to Barrande's famous Systême Silurien. Cloth cover split at front hinge, internally clean. A very good copy.

Original printed wrappers. = A ground-breaking work by the Dutch physicist and Nobel Prize winner Johannes Diderik van der Waals (1837-1923). "In 1890, van der Waals published a treatise on the Theory of Binary Solutions in the Archives Néerlandaises. By relating his equation of state with the Second Law of Thermodynamics, in the form first proposed by Willard Gibbs, he was able to arrive at a graphical representation of his mathematical formulations in the form of a surface which he called Psi surface following Gibbs, who used this Greek letter for the free energy of a system with different phases in equilibrium." (Wikipedia). This is an uncut and unmarked copy of the "Archives", with the 'van der Waals contribution on pp. 1-56. Uncut, with the widest possible margins. Rear wrapper very lightly spotted, otherwise a fine copy. Very rare in this state.

Purple endpapers. = Covers shooting expeditions to the Chinese Yangtze (or Yangzi) River valley and its shores and inland areas. Detailed information is given on hunting dogs, boat life, game birds, topography, etc., etc. With interesting accounts on the trapping of ducks in the river, and a chapter on Chinese methods of shooting and trapping game, among others. Lists of animals (species and - astonishing - numbers) killed by various shooting parties between 1875 and 1909 are also included. A much better than average copy, if not the best one currently available. Includes a lengthy index. Errata slip tipped in opposite p. 108. Includes the descriptions of new species. Published as supplement to the academy's Verhandlungen, or Novorum Actorum. Provenance: the Société géologique de France with their oval stamp on the Latin title. Foxing to the plates, as usual; small chip in the lower outer margin of the last plate, otherwise very good.

Original uniform quarter-cloth portfolios with printed title mounted on the front boards. = A very rare original - as published - copy, of an influential work by the German anatomist Rudolf Friedrich Johann Heinrich Wagner (1805-1864). "Wagner conducted research in a number of areas. His most important work concerned mammalian ova and sperm.... It remained for Wagner to discover (1835)...the nucleolus" (DSB). Portfolio straps partly lost; boards a bit soiled; text leaves somewhat foxed, mainly in the margins; plates - on thicker paper - generally cleaner. DSB vol. XIV, pp. 113-114.

Most "plates" are actually maps and/or profiles. The wrapper is of inferior paper, and much chipped at the edges. Text and plates clean, very good.

Gotha, Justus Perthes, 1861. 4to (26.3 x 22.0 cm). Title page, 25 pp., one large, folded map in black and blue. Disbound. = An intersting account, with a very detailed map, of the Panamian isthmus, the place where 50 years after this publication the Panama Canal was opened. Wagner included a narrative of his travel from Germany to Panama. From p. 21 onwards he mentions the importance of his study for digging a canal through the isthmus. Published as Ergänzungsheft 5 of Petermann's Geographische Mitteilungen. Some spotting, but in all a good, complete copy.

Green speckled edges. = An important botanical work after Linnaeus. This is the second, enlarged edition. Including a very large name index and the folding table, opposite p. lxviii. Göran, or Georg, Wahlenberg (1780-1851) was a Swedish naturalist. He "...received his doctorate in Medicine in 1806, was appointed botanices demonstrator in 1814, and professor of medicine and botany in 1829, succeeding Carl Peter Thunberg. He was the last holder of the undivided chair that in the previous century had been held by Linnaeus" (Wikipedia). With on the front pastedowns a pictorial bookplate of the Swedish botanist and lichenologist Ove Almborn (1914-1992). A very good copy. Stafleu and Cowan, 16523.

Speckled edges. = An uncommon work by the Swedish professor of medicine and botanist Göran "Georg" Wahlberg (1780-1851). The turn-of-the-century binding is simple, not inelegant. The folding map has a small stain on the inner margin and the outer margin is wisely reinforced with paper on the verso, otherwise a very good, clean, unmarked copy. His researches in the Swiss alps resulted in the book "De Vegetatione et Climate in Helvetia...", in which he gives an account of the plant regions and their designations, the tree limits, and the lower and upper limits of the various plants, comparing also the vegetation in northern Switzerland with that of Lapland". Colombo, The Colombo Museum, [1914]-1920. Four papers in one. 8vo (23.3 x 14.8 cm). 207 [32; 82; 60; 33] pp.; 4 [0; 2; 1; 1] plates. Contemporary half calf over red cloth boards. Gilt title on the spine. = In the third paper, the author describes the last two papers as "instalment[s] of the rough draft for the handbook on the birds of Ceylon". That work was published in 1925 but does not contain all the data presented here. The first paper is mainly on distribution of bird genera, then (and now) occurring on Ceylon in time and space. All three works are published in Spolia Zeylanica, the bulletin of the Ceylon Museum, volume 10, together with several other contributions to the natural history of what is now Sri Lanka. Joints rubbed, otherwise very good. Rare.
