Tokyo, 1939-1942. In two volumes. Large 8vo (26.1 x 19.1 cm). 1,251 pp.; one portrait, numerous plates. Original uniform printed wrappers. = Includes the important bibliography of the published writings of Yabe up to 1.IV.1939 mainly on geology, palaeontology and micropalaeontology. The many fine contributions in Japanese with English summaries, or in English, contain numerous new data including quite a few on fossils and with descriptions and illustrations of new and poorly known species. We find, for instance, Sitihei Nomura's "Summary of the fossil and Recent Japanese Pyramidellidae, with the description of several new species" which is of great importance to the study of this parasitic snail family throughout the Indo-Pacific. Front wrapper with repaired tear and right bottom corner a little warped affecting first few pages. Vague stamp on front wrappers, lacking the rear wrapper of the second volume (replaced by another board), spines consolidated, otherwise a very good set.

Moskva, Akademii NAUK, 1952. Large 8vo (25.8 x 17.0 cm). Full colour frontispiece, 107 pp., 53 (groups of) fine text illustrations, ten plates. Original printed boards. = Important and scarce monograph of the Polyplacophora (Amphineura, Loricata) of the seas of the former USSR, with the original descriptions and illustrations of more than ten new species. The frontispiece shows nine species in full colour. The plates and text illustrations are excellent, focussing on shells and living animals (plates), and shells, radulae and other taxonomically important parts (text figures). This is Fauna USSR volume 45. In Russian. There is a later (Jerusalem, 1965) translation, titled Shell-bearing mollusks (Loricata) of the seas of the U.S.S.R., but this is the original edition. Small, oval stamp of the library of the Tussian Academy of Sciences (the publisher) on front free endpaper, title page verso and plate versos (not shining through); a few stamps and a label on the rear board. Otherwise a very good copy.

In original transparent dustjacket and original pictorial slipcase (27.0 x 19.2 x 3.0 cm). = A surprisingly rare, well-illustrated work. Apart from microscopical life it also includes illustrations of pelagic molluscs, crustaceans, Cnidaria, etc. Bookplate of the Monica library on the front free endpaper verso; slight shelf-wear to the slipcase, otherwise in an excellent, clean condition.

Beijing, China Scientific Book Services, 2012. 4to (29.2 x 20.7 cm). 195 pp.; numerous b/w and full colour illustrations. Pictorial full colour laminated boards. = A rarely seen compilation of 30 papers on Chinese frshwater molluscs published between 1979 and 2011, and otherwise difficult to obtain. Many include descriptions and illustrations of new species. A mint copy.

Original green blind-stamped cloth with gilt title on spine. = First edition of this supplement which actually consists of two parts, each with its own pagination, but invariably they are found together. The illustrations in this work are not on separate plates, but placed throughout the work, each preceding the species descriptions. 4 pp. publisher's list of natural history publications bound in the rear. Boards with gilt ornamented rectangular borders; spines with five raised, gilt-lined bands and gilt title. Yellow endpapers. Top edges gilt. = A nicely bound and rare large paper copy of the uncommon first edition. "Normal" copies have a page-size of about 21.5 x 14.0 cm. The fine engravings are of fish, and fishery scenes. Some light shelfwear, erasure on front free endpaper, otherwise very good, clean set. Nissen ZBI, 4488.

Contemporary blue buckram with gilt title on the spine. = The complete first volume (of six). Definitely one of the rarest volumes of this series. This volume contains 13 papers, dealing with, for instance, the biology of reef-building corals, the physiology of corals, and organisms which destroy coral rocks (e.g., various boring molluscs). Well-illustrated. Number on spine foot; perforated stamp in the lower margin of the title leaf with cancellation stamp on verso. Otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Very large, multi-folded phytogeographical map in rear pocket. Original printed softcover. = Probably the most recent work on the vegetation of northwestern parts of China, including parts of the Gobi desert, but also including more forested regions. Well-illustrated. In Chinese. Also of use for neighbouring countries. A very good, clean copy.

Original printed wrappers. = A seldom-seen work on the botany of the island (and Kingdom) of Tonga in Polynesia (South Pacific). The flora is a mix of Pacific, endemic and introduced species. This is the Bernice P. Bishop Museum's Bulletin 220. An excellent, clean copy.
