1960. The bibliography is reprinted from Journal of the Society for the Bibliography of Natural History. Volume 3 part 7 (21 pages, paperback). The Bolivian Pteridophytes paper is offprinted from British Fern Gazette, Volume 9 part8, (11 pages, loose-leaf and stapled) and was based on a manuscript left by Alston in 1958. From the library of the botanist Eric Groves, with his stamps. Interestingly, also included is a set of four passport photos of Alston. [Alston was a botanical systematist specialising in pteridology and was, apparently, the first pteridologist to work at the British Museum (Natural History).. Paperback. Good.

London: Ward, Lock, Bowden & Co Volumes 1 - 7, popular re-issue. Not dated, but probably c. 1892 -5 (though the British Library lists seven volumes of this edition, and dates it 1881-88). One of the most elusive of all late Victorian journals for the keen handyman. This set is bound in a simple brown cloth which is a little marked worn and frayed, but generally still very sound, though the spine head of volume two is rather torn, and a hinge cracked in volume five. The contents are generally clean, though the folding plans and plates are ofter printed on an inferior paper which has browned, as have the adjoining pages. There are approximately 24 of these folding plates, and they have all suffered some tearing, though generally not with any loss of text. Two of them are detached, and at least one is now in two halves. Several have been repaired at a much earlier time. A small number of illustrations on tinted paper, octavo, pp xxxii, 302, very clean internally, green cloth very slightly marked, the dustwrapper is a little worn and foxed, with several small pieces missing on the margins, a slightly larger peice missing from the rear cover and a small closed tear on the front, but now nicely protected in a removable clear cover. ["David was truly a superb naturalist, with extensive knowledge in geology, mineralogy, ornithology, zoology, and botany. He also had in his character an innate respect for people and their culture, no matter how foreign they may have seemed to him. [The John Murray Expedition of 1933-1934 ‘pioneered bilateral relations in the field of oceanography, at a time when the Law of the Sea was not even an embryonic concept’ (Aleem & Morcos, 1984). Funded by a £20,000 bequest from oceanographer, John Murray, this expedition was a collaboration between Britain and Egypt. Aboard HEMS Mabahiss, British zoologist Lt. Col. Dr R.B. Poultry & Lombard Street, London: Charles Dilly & James Phillips, 1787. Octavo, pp xx, 51, a little age-toning and discolouration, the title page more marked and with a small old paper repair to the upper corner, a near contemporary signature - "R. Prime" - to the title page, otherwise very sound internally. in a later twentieth century simple quarter calf binding, a little marked and faded, the boards slightly bowed. Of great interest is the seedsman's advertisement bound in at the front - Observations on the Culture of the Mangel Wurzel, by Jenkins and Gwyther, Nursery and Seedsmen, New Road and in the Regent's Park. Ths extends to two and a half small sides, folded and marked, with the remains of an address and a postmark on the final side. Lettsom's work is rare anyway, and I can find no trace of another copy of the Jenkins and Gwyther advertisement. With the signature of an early owner John Gillett on the rear endpaper. With the further Quaker signatures of Joseph Gillett of Somerton and William S. Clark. [Samuel Bownas was born in 1676, to Quaker parents, although his father died when he was a month old.
