Redtenbacher, with the two hand-coloured plates). Kotschy collected all the material, but apparently the other natural history material never became a subject of publication. Er unternahm 1867–69 eine ausgedehnte Reise nach Mittel- und Nordamerika (Mexiko, Westindien, Texas), danach besuchte er verschieden marokkanische Hafenstädte und drang von Oran aus in die algerische Sahara vor.- Enthält u.a. folgende Kapitel: "Der Nil. Küstenflüsse des Mittelmeeres. Der Kongo. Der Niger. Der Senegal. Der Gambia. Der Ogowe. Der Oranje. Der Tschambesi" etc.

Spine browned and a little rubbed. Some foxing in places. An uncut copy. In 1873/74 Raffray explored Ethiopia, Zanzibar and the regions around Bagamojo and Mombasa. He travelled from Massaua to Adua and Sokota and from there to the then unexplored region of the Agao, about which he brought the first reliable news to Europe. He crossed Godsham and went to Lake Tana and Gondar and then through Woggara via Axum back to Adua and Massaua. Afterwards he spent several months in Zanzibar, explored the forests and shores of Bagamojo and then went to Mombasa. – Raffray later became French Consul of Massaua and carried out a second expediton through Ethiopia in 1881 together with Gabriel Simon. – Henze IV, 532.

Original binding with title and publication advert on front and back cover, mounted over new boards, paper a bit browned, overall in good condition. Extremely rare publication in spanish about the Philippines tribes at Luzon and Mindanao. Explicative text of each photographic plate. This book was published at Dresden in two editions (german and Spanish – both are very rare). Some tribes are here represented for the first time like the Guinaanes, Banaos, Silipanes, Calingas , Apayaos and Quinganes. It is a cornerstone for the graphic representation of the Philippines tribes that Schadenberg carried out on the spot during some years. This graphic book is extremely rare so we have tracked only two copies outside Spain at Worldcat: State Library of NSW Sydney and AU NS 2000 Australia. No copy at the British Library and Library of Congress.

ca. 1910. Oblong Quarto. 28 leaves. With 23 gelatin silver print photographs, each approx. 9x14 cm (3 ? x 5 ? in). Period brown gilt tooled half morocco with brown cloth boards. A very good album. The strong images of this album show Eastern Ethiopia from Dire Dawa to Harar and include the "Head of the Pass to Dire Dawa, "Lake Haramaya," "A Road" [to Harar], "Huts," camels and herders, and eighteen views of Harar including panoramas, "town from N.E., "West Gate," market scenes, British official on horseback (Consul?), sporting a pith helmet and uniform (likely the compiler of the album) and "Consular Hut from West." "Harar lost some of its commercial importance with the creation of the Addis Ababa - Djibouti Railway, initially intended to run via the city but diverted north of the mountains between Harar and the Awash River to save money. With twelve ink drawn charts indicating the ships' tracks, from ca. 9x20,5 (3 ? x 7 ? in) to ca. 20,5x26,5 cm (8 x 10 ? in). Also with six albumen prints from ca. 9x12 cm (3 ? x 4 ? in) to ca. 18x23,5 cm (7 x 9 ? in), and a paper silhouette of a naval officer mounted in the end.
