Description:
Manuscript on vellum, single sheet, 385x570mm; calligraphy in black ink within wide calligraphic border incorporating a number of coloured allegorical figures, with one large colour view of the island of San Secondo in Venice at head; signed by the elders of the Berlin Merchants' Guild, and by Eckstein, with wax seal in a wooden capsule at foot; framed without plica in a modern wooden frame, and mounted on card. A very good example of a late eighteenth century Berlin guild apprenticeship certificate, marking the successful completion by Joseph Friedrich Drewitz of a six-year apprenticeship in the special goods store of the merchant Carl Reinhold (here stated as Reinhard) Eckstein. Signed by the guild elders Johann Jacob Gilles and Johann Jacob Witte, as well as by Eckstein himself, the certificate is adorned with an attractive gouache depicting the island of San Secondo in Venice; now entirely left to nature, this was at the time the Venetian hub for the trade in herbs and spices from Asia, and the… Read More

Description:
Aristotle's influence towers over western philosophy and science. His astonishing range and depth – philosophy and logic, the physical and natural sciences, ethics and politics – make him indisputably the most important intellectual figure in the western tradition before the modern age. This volume illustrates the ways in which the Aristotelian corpus has been transmitted over time. In particular, it focuses on the crucial moment when, thanks to the invention of printing, Aristotle's works became widely available in Latin, Greek, and in vernacular languages in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The extraordinary books and manuscripts in this volume, selected from the collection of the Martin J. Gross Foundation, demonstrate just how intellectuals received and interpreted Aristotle. Through commentaries, treatises, lecture courses and schools and above all in the written marginalia of books, the volume reveals the extent of the era's engagement with Aristotle. It includes a beautifully… Read More

Description:
This book brings together eighty obituaries written by Nicolas Barker. The first were published in 1966 and the last in 2018. Print links them all: they were printers, publishers, librarians, booksellers or book collectors, their lives joined by a common dedication to the printed word and all that goes with it. At First, All Went Well… opens with C.H. Wilkinson and Sir Sydney Roberts and ends with Barney Rosenthal and Ian Doyle. Such people as Graham Pollard, Don McKenzie, Nicolete Gray, Mary Hyde, Bernard Breslauer, Justin Howes and Joe Tanner are then chronicled along the way. In 2013 Quaritch published Nicolas Barker at eighty: a list of his publications to mark his 80th birthday. As the book records, Nicolas Barker has written on an extensive range of topics including medieval manuscripts, calligraphy, forgery, the book trade, typography, bibliophily and bookbinding.ISBN 978-0-9955192-1-38vo, (230 x 145 mm), pp. 382; cloth-bound.

Description:
First edition of the 'first eye-witness report on Tibet and Bhutan to be published in English. The book remained the only account of those countries available to English readers until the publication in 1876 of the journals of George Bogle and Thomas Manning. Through the editions that quickly followed in French (1800), German (1801), and Italian (1817), the book had a considerable impact on the European imagination' (ODNB). 'Captain Turner's journey to Tibet in 1783 was a follow-up to that of George Bogle's mission of 1774 ... The object of Turner's passage through Bhutan and his visit to the Tibetan Court was to ascertain the nature of the relationships of Bhutan with Tibet, and of the latter with China. The subsequent narrative is a leisurely paced and highly detailed portrayal of the area's natural history, observations on social and cultural characteristics, and glimpses of beautiful mountain scenery. For example, Turner's prose records his delight at the discovery of a strawberry patch, his… Read More
