Archive of material from the businesses of Anton M. Holter, the father of the lumber business in Montana. This archive includes 13 binders of manuscript letters, orders and receipts, most on company billhead and dated between the 1870s and 1890s. Each binder has between 50 and 125 sleeves; most sleeves contain multiple items. There are approximately 1500 items. Correspondence has expected wear and soiling but overall the archive is in very good condition. Holter family papers are found at the Montana Historical Society and the Library of Congress.This archive of material surrounds the A. M. Holter Hardware Company, a business influential in the social and economic development of Montana Territory. Central City, CO: A. M. Thomas, Photo. Very Good. Mounted albumen print depicting a scene along a railroad in Colorado with photographer's imprint on mount. Albumen print measures 7 ½" x 9 ½"; with mount 10" x 12". Published circa 1900. Original mount has light wear to edges and light toning; photo has moderate overexposure or sunning but content can still be clearly viewed. A. M. Thomas was a photographer active in Central City, Colorado from 1900-1901 (Mautz p. 209). With no title and little information on Thomas, the specifics of this image are a mystery to this cataloguer. The image is set in the Rocky Mountains, likely near Central City, Colorado, with a creek at the center of the image, a railroad track on the left, a wood-plank retaining wall on the right, and a few sets of pipes running along and across the creek. .

Very Good. 1851. Letter written to Edward D. Hicks of Nashville, Tennessee by his sister Em Hicks in Jackson, Mississippi. Letter is dated Jackson, Nov. 14th, 1851 and is in original stampless envelope. Letter was written on blue paper and in a legible hand. Envelope is date stamped Nov. 18, Jackson, Mi. and has "5" rubber stamped in the right hand corner. Envelope has heavy wear and toning; letter has two ½" round closed tears along folds, minimal content is affected. We believe the recipient of this letter to be Edward Dickson Hicks, Jr. (1831-1894), a prominent citizen in the Nashville community. Hicks was the son of Edward Dickson Hicks and Nancy Watkins Davis, and the family owned Devon Farm in Nashville. Edward Dickson Hicks, Jr. participated in the family business, raising Devon cattle and promoting the breed. He also had a touch of Gold Fever. Very Good. Letter written by Reverend John Niles during his years at Yale College to fellow student of divinity Sylvester Dana. In stampless covers with address reading "Mr. Sylvester Dana, Student of Divinity, Somers" (Connecticut) ; covers have a "paid" stamp and another unreadable stamp (possibly New Haven April…). Very good with light soiling, minor fold tears and a ½" round portion missing from bottom edge where sealed. Letter is dated Yale College, April 9th 1790 (the 0 has a large flourish so it could possibly be 1798). John Niles attended Yale College and joined the church in his later years at Yale; he and a close friend, Lyman Beecher (mentioned in this letter) , stayed on to study theology with the President of the College Timothy Dwight. The handwriting is somewhat hard to read and we could not decipher the name of the author "D. La[?]". Letter has light foxing and soiling. Farming and selling land are the two topics of discussion in the letter. The author writes of his wheat and potato harvest, his gardens, and reports that there were "no bugs, no chinch bugs, no grasshoppers, nor crickets but plenty of toads." The author also writes of the many folks selling up and how he was approached by a land buyer: "I seen Selby he is in the land business he told he would sell my homeplace and timber claim in less than two weeks…There is lots of land buyers traveling through the country, there been two or three here." Document measures 27 ¼" x 15" when unfolded. Five small sheets are glued together with the top and bottom sections (about 3" each) printed, and the majority of information in manuscript.
