Previous owner's name on left side of front endpapers and a Christmas gift inscription on the right side for 1943. "A vivid, human story of the men in the U.S. Merchant Marine who man the life lines of the United Nations." Made into a movie starring Humphrey Bogart. 21 stills from the movie have been inserted into the book to add to the exciting text. The usual 'Yellowing' of wartime paper, but still a VG copy. Price-clipped pictorial d.j. has some chipping at edges but is at least a G+ example with some of the movie stills on the back of the d.j. and a dark, menacing scene on the spine and front of the d.j. (also in the book across from p. 33).

Not least of these was that it represented the first widespread use of the airplane--which many people thought would be of little military value--as a major weapon of war. Such thinking was quickly disproved, and the airplanes described in this volume illustrate how the military airplane developed from the unarmed observation machines of 1914 to the highly effective specialized machines that were in service by November of 1918." The presentation of the aircraft provides a "complete library in one volume".
Dozens of airplanes are pictured and described, not just Great Britain planes but also those of Italy and Germany.

From 1967 Albert Manser dedicated himself exclusively to painting. Manser achieved popularity across borders with his richly illustrated children's books "Albertli: The Story of an Appenzeller Farm Boy" and "Barbara".

The usual, wonderful illustrations from the late Errol Le Cain. From the d.j.: "Where does Dark go when you switch on the light? Curious, young Alfi wonders this himself as he lies snuggled under his blankets. He tosses and turns, and he tries counting sheep, but he just can't sleep without knowing the answer. What he learns when Dark actually speaks amazes Alfi, and will surprise and amuse young readers as well." 1st U.S. edition.

First paragraph of the front flap: "For almost exactly thirty years Robert Thacker has been researching this book, steeping himself in Alice Munro's life and work, latterly working with her co-operation to make it complete. An interesting book. On the copyright page (Roman numerals for 1969), it says "Made and printed in Great Britain by Purnell & Sons with an SBN (see above)", but "McClelland and Stewart Limited, Toronto and Montreal" is on the title page and also on the front board and the spine. 1st Canadian Edition thus. There are many amusing illustrations throughout the book, both b/w and colour by artist Rosemary Honeybourne. Although sticking to the storyline of Alice in Wonderland, the illustrations are refreshingly different.

A wonderful reprint of this ageless story and Arthur Rackham's amazing illustrations: 13 full-page examples in colour, as well as many in-text b/w drawings as well. Glossy paper. Marker ribbon included. Missing d.j. Uncommon in this edition.

Another of the several hundred editions of Alice in Wonderland and featuring yet another artist, Tove Jansson, who contributes yet another form of illustration for the many characters who appear in Alice in Wonderland. She was born in Helsinki in 1914 but wrote in Swedish. Her picture books about the Finn family Moomintroll have been published all over the world. In Sweden, she was awarded the two highest awards in children's literature: the Nils Holgersson Plaque for her writing and the Elsa Beskow Plaque for her illustrations.
This Jansson-illustrated "Alice" is seemingly scarce and even without the jacket, commands a good price.
