Description:
Exhibition Catalogue. Frontispiece photo of A. J. Casson, 1958. From the Introduction: "When Alfred Joseph Casson died in 1992 Canadian art lost its connection with a man who, as an artist, designer and promoter of Canadian art, saw an unprecedented change in the way we look and think about art in this country. He was constant in his own vision of the Canadian landscape and popular with the public as a painter and, in later life, as a personality. His career spanned more than sixty years, during which period there were the inevitable artistic highs and lows. Recognition of his contribution has been sporadic and uneven. Yet, his achievements were real. Many of his paintings--Anglican Church at Magnetawan; White Pine; Mist, Rain and Sun and his various watercolours of rural Ontario towns--have become icons in Canadian art."

Description:
From the book flap: "Painter of the "Mona Lisa of Bali", the Indonesian artist Abdul Aziz was an extraordinary Renaissance man. A revolutionary fighter, artist, sculptor, musician and violin maker, he also kept an astonishing store of original documents, sketches and photographs. His life story as told within these pages is also the history of Indonesia during the last century, seen through his own recollections and those of his friends and family. Too busy to hold exhibitions during his life and spurning the commercial art world, his life and work is now made public for the first time."

Description:
From the Introduction: "History has always been important to our family. We believe in the old saying, "In order to know which way we are headed, we need to know where we've been in the past." The Shaw family has traced its history since 1819 when my great great grandparents, Joseph and Sarah Shaw, and their children sailed to North America after traveling by wagon from Boston, Lincolnshire to Liverpool, England. History is delicate. It is hard to keep a whole story intact. Thankfully, almost half a century ago, my cousins Rita Ashton and Velma Churchlill had the foresight to interview our great grandparents, Phelan and Agnes Shaw, research countless records and reconstruct that journey. It was from those seeds of information about our family that this book was developed."
B&W and colour photos and illustrations throughout. Glossy pictorial d.j. Related bookmark laid in.

Description:
Previous owner's name on left side of front endpapers and a Christmas gift inscription on the right side for 1943. "A vivid, human story of the men in the U.S. Merchant Marine who man the life lines of the United Nations." Made into a movie starring Humphrey Bogart. 21 stills from the movie have been inserted into the book to add to the exciting text. The usual 'Yellowing' of wartime paper, but still a VG copy. Price-clipped pictorial d.j. has some chipping at edges but is at least a G+ example with some of the movie stills on the back of the d.j. and a dark, menacing scene on the spine and front of the d.j. (also in the book across from p. 33).

Description:
From the Foreword by Claude Taylor, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada, speaking of Gordon McGregor: "When he became President in February 1948, TCA was a young pioneering domestic carrier. When he retired twenty years later, Air Canada was a world airline and a national institution. The man himself had become a public figue, deeply respected even by his adversaries. To us in Air Canada, he was the object of both respect and affection."
"When Gordon McGregor retired he took on the task of writing a book about the history of Air Canada. Unfortunately, he died before the book was finished. Miss Beth Buchanan, who worked with him in his Presidency and in the preparation of the memoirs, his papers have been put in order and, to the greatest extent possible, gaps filled and his wishes accurately reflected."
"In memory of a great President, Air Canada has undertaken this private printing of the McGregor papers for distribution to his old colleagues and friends within the airline and… Read More

Description:
1st U.S. edition. Printed in Great Britain by R. J. Acford Ltd., Chichester, Sussex, England. From the d.j.: "The war of 1914-18 was a remarkable and important epoch for many widely different reasons. Not least of these was that it represented the first widespread use of the airplane--which many people thought would be of little military value--as a major weapon of war. Such thinking was quickly disproved, and the airplanes described in this volume illustrate how the military airplane developed from the unarmed observation machines of 1914 to the highly effective specialized machines that were in service by November of 1918." The presentation of the aircraft provides a "complete library in one volume".
Dozens of airplanes are pictured and described, not just Great Britain planes but also those of Italy and Germany.

An interesting book. On the copyright page (Roman numerals for 1969), it says "Made and printed in Great Britain by Purnell & Sons with an SBN (see above)", but "McClelland and Stewart Limited, Toronto and Montreal" is on the title page and also on the front board and the spine. 1st Canadian Edition thus. There are many amusing illustrations throughout the book, both b/w and colour by artist Rosemary Honeybourne. Description:
From the front endpaper: "Day's commentary, woven around the complete text of the novel for ease of cross-reference on every page, uncovers the many layers of teaching, concealed by manipulation of language, that are carried so lightly in the form of a fairy tale. These layers relate directly to Carroll's interest in philosophy, history, mathematics, classics, poetry, spiritualism and even to his love of music. Many of the characters in the book were based on real-life contemporaries of Carroll's. Day identifies them all, and in doing so demonstrates that 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' is also a veritable Who's Who of Oxford at the height of its power and influence in the Victorian Age. Carroll's novel is a memory palace, given to Alice as the great gift of an education. It was delivered in coded form because, in that age, it was a gift no girl would be permitted to receive in any other way."

Another of the several hundred editions of Alice in Wonderland and featuring yet another artist, Tove Jansson, who contributes yet another form of illustration for the many characters who appear in Alice in Wonderland. She was born in Helsinki in 1914 but wrote in Swedish. Her picture books about the Finn family Moomintroll have been published all over the world. In Sweden, she was awarded the two highest awards in children's literature: the Nils Holgersson Plaque for her writing and the Elsa Beskow Plaque for her illustrations.
