Description:
This DeGolyer Library major exhibition attempts to explore the development of the Alamo myth itself and to suggest what that myth may reflect about the American character. This investigation has revealed much that is confusing and contradictory. The Alamo's defense certainly was heroic and has thus served well as a standard for subsequent American warriors, but this battle suggests a darker side to the American character as well. The Texas revolution deepened the split between North and South over the expansion of slavery into the Southwest and West. To many of its contemporaries, such as abolitionist leader Benjamin Lundy, the Texas revolution suggested not a fight for freedom but he aggressive expansion of slavery. The link between the Alamo and slavery may or may not be historically tenuous- and in the popular legend it is nonexistent- but the broader question of racism in the development of the Alamo myth should not be casually dismissed. The exhibit explores this theme, specifically in respect to… Read More

Description:
During the turbulent final years of the Indian Wars, a young Catholic priest entered service as a missionary to the Sioux Indians in Dakota Territory. Father Francis M. Craft rode a three-hundred-mile circuit on the Standing Rock Reservation and, in 1890, was a witness to events at Wounded Knee, where he sustained serious wounds. His journals provide valuable insights into reservation life, including the federal acquisition of Sioux lands and tensions between the Catholic Church and the Indian Bureau.
Thomas W. Foley, author of a previous biography of Craft, now presents key selections from Craft's voluminous journals and papers. In addition to documenting significant events, Craft's writings reveal his driven, stubborn personality as he went about his day-to-day routines: performing sacraments, ministering to the sick, even working to create an Indian sisterhood. Sympathetic to Indian traditions, he provides valuable insight into Lakota spiritual life.
By drawing on Craft's eyewitness report of… Read More

Description:
Between 1909 and 1915 Eugène Atget produced seven albums filled with photographs of Paris at the height of its belle époque. The albums were prototypes for books that were never published. Now for the first time Atget's albums are presented in full, edited with the sequencing and repetition that the great photographer intended. In addition, Atget's pictures are analyzed in an altogether new way: as commercial picture documents produced by a photographer for the artists, archivists, antiquarians, designers, and builders who were his clients.Molly Nesbit defines and explores the nature of Atget's pictures in terms of their form, practical vision, and relation to knowledge, providing the first discussion of the commercial picture document. She also offers a glimpse into the politics of Atget's ways of seeing: how he identified with the far left; how his sense of modern life and the variety in popular culture was exhibited through the artisans, cabarets, ragpicker carts, and marketplaces he… Read More
