Magnificent Pictorial Banquet menu with a map showing the proposed Panama Canal, with elaborate naval fittings, harbor view and sailing ships in honor of Ferdinand de Lesseps. Measures 13 ⅝ x 9 ¾ inches, printed in three colors on card stock, corners bumped, otherwise in fine, clean condition. Includes the multiple course menu.
Ferdinand Marie, Comte de Lesseps (9 November 1805 – 7 December 1894) was a French diplomat and later developer of the Suez Canal, which in 1869 joined the Mediterranean and Red Seas, substantially reducing sailing distances and times between Europe and East Asia.
He attempted to repeat this success with an effort to build a Panama Canal at sea level during the 1880s, but the project was devastated by epidemics of malaria and yellow fever in the area, as well as beset by financial problems, and the planned Lesseps Panama Canal was never completed. quarto, 293 pages, both manuscript and typescript notes and minutes, several inlaid items, bound in a commercially manufactured ledger, binding worn, rubbed, and scuffed, back-strip missing, text in very good, clean, and legible condition. Many of the typed pages are mounted on pages of the ledger.
Minutes describe the workings and activities of the privately funded and incorporated Community Service Bureau of Belleville, a social and family welfare association founded on December 18, 1928, in Belleville, Essex County, New Jersey. Belleville is just outside of Newark. The volume chronicles the work of the Bureau during the Depression Years and the beginnings of World War II providing relief, visiting nurses and health and medical care to residents of Belleville.

A front-page Editorial concerns 19 year-old Jeremiah Averbuch, who was killed at the home of the Chicago Chief of Police, allegedly during an Anarchist attempt to assassinate the official. The young man's sister protested that he was an honest young man, about to move to Iowa, who had gone to the Chief's house merely to obtain a ""certificate of good character"" which he could use in seeking new employment in the Midwest. B'nai B'rith dated to the 1840s, but it was not until 1913 that the Jewish fraternal organization established an Anti-Defamation League to protest anti-Semitism in various areas of American life.
