Half green calfskin, smooth ornated spine (contemporary binding in the romantic style). First edition of this rare, richly illustrated work on the city of Bayonne. The first part covers the history of the city (from antiquity to the 1830s), followed by the cathedral, the Cinq-Cantons, the allées-marines, women, Biarritz, Cambo, Itcatsou and the Basques. The book also contains notes by Ulysse Darracq, pharmacist at Saint-Esprit, on the flora, freshwater and saltwater fish and birds of the Landes and Western Pyrenees. The plates are lithographed after drawings by Hélène Feillet (1812-1889), a Basque painter and lithographer: view of Bayonne, its Cathedral, the Porte d'Espagne, the English cemetery, the port-vieux in Biarritz, and the spa in Cambo. Minor foxing, small trace of light waterstain, one leaf torn without loss. A fine copy in a fine romantic binding.
