Description:
Susan Musgrave is an award-winning Canadian poet and author, known for her challenging and powerful works of prose and poetry. Becky Swan's Book was inspired by the discovery that one of her ancestor's was the last woman executed in England, likely for charges related to the practice of witchcraft. The poems in this book are thus each written from the perspective of witches living on the border between Scotland and England in the eighteenth century. The appearance of the poems in the work contributes to the sense of age and mystery they invoke. The text is presented entirely in a Gothic-style script, and at the end of each poem is found a catchword or catchwords for the poem on the following page, a feature of many manuscripts and early printed books. This is one of a limited edition run of 1000 copies.
This copy is in Good condition, with some age related wear to the covers and spine in particular. The pages and text inside are, however, in excellent condition and the binding is secure. A point of… Read More

Description:
John Lawrence Le Breton Hammond (1872-1949) and Lucy Barbara Hammond (1873-1961) were historians and authors known for their works on social history, particularly the plight of the working class and the origins of social discontent arising from the working class experience. Married in 1901, both had received a classical education, and they were most well-known for their trilogy composed of The Village Labourer (1911), The Town Labourer (1917), and The Skilled Labourer (1919), which surveyed the experiences of the working class at the time of the Industrial Revolution.
Both were active in social causes. Barbara was an early feminist, and Leonard worked as a journalist for papers such as The Nation and the Manchester Guardian. He is particularly associated with the New Liberalism of the Edwardian period.
Their book The Bleak Age, published by Penguin first in 1934, and then in a revised form in 1947, of which this is an example, was an abridgement of their 1930 book The Age of the Chartists. This work,… Read More

Description:
The The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church according to the use of the Anglican Church of Canada, published in 1959, was a revision of the 1918 edition ordered by the General Synod of the Anglican Church in 1943.
The revisions did nothing to alter the fundamental meaning or intention of the text, but rather were intended to better communicate the faith.
This volume is in poor condition. There is a previous owner's name written on the flyleaf, as well as an address sticker. The Primate's Prayer for Anglican Mission is stuck to the front pastedown. The front hinge is slightly cracked, and the covering of the spine has separated at the front edge and along the top. There is also slight paint staining to the front edge of the cover.
Internally the book is in excellent condition with no damage to the text itself.

Description:
The Bitter Cry of the Children is one of the most well-known works by British socialist author John Spargo, who developed his own interpretation of socialism which attempted to unite it with his Christian faith, thereby creating what was termed Christian Socialism. The Bitter Cry of the Children is his account of the appalling working conditions experienced by child labourers in the early 20th century.
This particular volume has an interesting provenance. There is a bookplate in the front indicating that the book once belonged to R.B. Chadwick, who helped to found the Children's Aid Society in Alberta in 1909 when he was the newly appointed Superintendent of Neglected and Dependent Children in Alberta.
This volume is in Good condition. There is some significant bumping to the bottom corner of the front cover, and some bumping to the other corners as well. The cloth covering the boards is also worn in places, but the gilt and printing on the cover is clear and bright, as is the gilt on the spine. There… Read More
