Altorfii Noricorum (Nürnberg), Iod. G. Kohlesius, 1723. Small 4to (19.0 x 16.2 cm). Title page, [ii], 100 pp.; one engraved map of the Nürenberg area and one peculiar engraving showing a crossbowman on a beehive with two coats-of-arms: one of Crenan, Leidlarius, Eschanson and Butigul, and one engraved initial letter. Wonderful medieval-style contemporary parchment binding decorated with blind-tooled roller stamp decoration of hunting scenes including deer, birds and lions. Edges red. = A most curious and probably rare book, being a thesis on apiculture and forestry containing 24 chapters and appendices written in Latin. These are followed by a "Mantissa documentorum quae ad historiam Butigulariorum item et Zeidelariorum atque Forestariorum Norimbergensium, magis illustrandam, facere possunt" - a series of documents numbered I-XVIIII [SIC] being letters in Latin and, later, High German, with Latin comments. Tokyo, (circa 1881-1882). Two volumes (of three). Japanese stitched binding (24.8 x 16.5 cm). With 67 coloured woodblock prints and text in Japanese. Original stitched wrappers. = A very pleasing collection of Japanese birds, many of them waterfowl. "This was Kono Bairei's first kacho, for in spite of the title it may be so classified, since many of the pictures emphasize the plants as much as the birds. The illustrations in these volumes are in black (with dilutions to grey), orange-brown (with dilutions), and vaguely perceptible tinting of the grays with green or blue. Being printed from the same block... the effects are extremely life-like and pleasing" (Barlett and Shohara). Complete copies would comprise three volumes, with 100 plates. Some 20 plates are double-paged. In fine condition. OCLC reports a complete set in the New York City Metropolitan Museum of Art only. Barlett and Shohara, Japanese Botany, p. 529. Escher (1898-1972): Bond of Union, 1956 (Bool 409). Printed in a limited edition of only 450, individually numbered and stamped with the authentication seal of the M. C. Escher Foundation. Later full grey cloth with gilt title on the spine. = Published in the Nova Acta Leopoldina. Some foxing in the beginning, but plates are fine. Nicely bound copy. Bound copies are rare.

New York, NY, The American Museum of Natural History, 1930-1942. Eight papers in eight. Large 4to (31.1 x 24.0 cm). 770 pp., 361 text figures, portrait of Bashford Dean, 47plates (seven in full colour). Uniform original printed wrappers. = An important series of contributions, by Bartram G. Smith, J. Leroy Conel, and the editor, on fossil, and Recent "primitive" fishes (e.g. sharks), published by the American Museum of Natural History. The first well-illustrated article is about Bashford Dean (1867-1928) himself, who was quite a colourful character. One of his major claims to fame is, of course, his Bibliography of the fishes which was published in three volumes between 1916 and 1923, and still remains the major ichthyological reference work. Another is his work on effective body armour for soldiers fighting in trenches, and pilots of war planes. Wien, Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1870. 8vo (24.5 x 15.5 cm). 35 pp. In original printed wrappers. = Published in the academy's Sitzungsberichte, but this is the rare offprint with a new pagination and wrappers. Much rare than the author's "Uber Das Iberische Alphabet". Wrapper edges a bit chipped due to the lower paper quality, otherwise very good, clean unmarked.

This is the first reprint, published in Batavia, whereas the 1st edition was published in the Netherlands. Loose leaved in original printed paper portfolio. = With fine photos and engravings. Published in the museum's Annales Série I(III)(4). Portfolio a bit age-toned, text and plates in very good condition.

Buenos Aires, Juan A. Alsina (Museo Nacional), 1897. Large 8vo (25.5 x 16.8 cm). 80 pp. Later blind green mock leather of green "reptile skin" boards. = A good monograph by the Russian-born Argentine zoologist Federico Guillermo Carlos Berg (1843-1902). Published in the museum's Anales, volume 5 (= Serie 2, volume II). The whole volume, with unrelated zoological papers Paper slightly toned, as always. Some light foxing, but not in the Berg contribution. Blindstamp in title page lower margin, otherwise a very good copy.

Stuttgart, Staatliches Museum fïr Naturkunde, 1992. 8vo (24.4 x 16.4 cm). 173 pp., ten plates, 56 text illustrations. No wrappers issued. = A detailed study, based on an amazing, uninterupted sequence of sedimental layers in which the evolution of these fresh water snails is perfectly preserved. Stamp and handwritten numbers on front page; otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Six oblong cardboard sheets (ca. 20.0 x 16,0 cm), with fine hand-colouring, five cards with delicate cut-outs and one backpanel, together forming a scene in a forest, with hunters chasing a bear. Preserved in an attractive 20th-century felt-covered wooden box with glass front and top (28 x 21 x 17.5 cm). = A wonderfully preserved peepshow, or Kulissenbilder, being a complete set of cards, with delicate cut-outs and hand-colouring showing a bear hunt in the woods. The cards are numbered 1-6 in an old hand on the versos. Preserved in a custom-made box, showing the scene as originally intended. "Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756), a native of Augsburg was the son of a colour merchant. He began his career as an artist by the attachment to a local publishing house but had by 1708 moved to Berlin where he was engaged in the designs after Eosander von Goethe of a the Silberbüfett im Ritterall at Berlin and of a porcelain cabinet in Charlottenberg. No wrappers issued. = A collection of offprints, mainly on Chameleons, including Dick Hillenius's Notes I, IV and V, but also a list of type specimens in the ZMA, a large paper on Madagascarian mantellid frogs, etc., etc. A very good set.

London, Groombridge and Sons, 1855. Small 8vo (17.5 x 12.4 cm). 76, [ii] pp.; eight engraved and originally hand-coloured plates. Original blind-stamped green cloth with gilt title and gilt ornaments on the spine, and gilt title on the front board. = A well-preserved copy of the first edition of a handsome introduction to conchology, by the British chemist, naturalist and writer Henry Gardiner Adams (c.1811-1881). Blind-stamped on both boards is the title addition Young naturalist's library. Both the engravings on the plates and those in the text are printed in reverse, thus with all the gastropods left-handed. The work was reprinted at least four times (1856, 1871, 1887, 1903), but this is the seldom-seen true first edition. Remnants of a bookplate on the front pastedown; bookseller's blindstamp in the top margin of the front free endpaper, a few spots but generally in a very good condition. Not in Nissen, who only records the author's similar publication on butterflies.

Berlin, Nicolai, 1855. 4to (27.8 x 22.3 cm). 135 pp.; 12 fine, lithographed plates. Contemporary marbled boards with printed title mounted. Speckled edges. = A well-illustrated monograph. Also published in the Abhandlungen of the Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, but this is the offprint with new page and plate numbering. Written by the German pharmacist, mycologist, botanist and Begonia specialist Johann Friedrich Klotzsch (1805-1860). Library stamp on title. Board edges and spine ends rubbed. Internally an excellent, clean copy. Stafleu and Cowan, 3739. Not in Nissen BBI.

Berlin, [privately published], 1898. 8vo (18.8 x 13.0 cm). 93 pp.; lithographed frontispiece, several woodcuts. Original pictorial wrappers. = A rarely seen monograph on diseases of parrots in captivity, by an ornithologist from Berlin. The preface is by the German ornithologist Oskar von Riesenthal (author of, e.g., Die Raubvögel Deutschlands und des angrenzenden Mitteleuropas), and dated 1897. Next to nothing is known about the author. A pencilled note, 'Sehr Selten', on the last text leaf, is very true. We have never seen another copy. OCLC reports only two copies in libraries (in Denmark and Germany). Front wrapper chipped at lower inner and outer margin, otherwise very good. Not in any major bibliography.

Printed half cloth, gilt title on spine. = This work includes descriptions and illustrations of rather rich faunas and include many new species, and a few new genera. This is Palaeontologia Sinica 158 (New Series B, 15). In Chinese with a seven pages English summary. Library stamp on front board, front flyleaf and title page, otherwiose a very good clean copy.

Freiburg, C. A. Wagner, 1903. 8vo (22.1 x 14.6 cm). Title page; 93 pp. Eight lithographed plates. No wrappers. = A very rare but important contribution to the marine fauna, in particular Mollusca, of the Liassic of the Alps region around Como (Italy). It includes illustrations of well-preserved shells, as well as descriptions of new and poorly known species. It is the author's thesis, but also Geologisch-Palaeontologische Studien in den Comasker Alpen I. Full name of the author is Hartwig Alexander Cyprian Fromhold von Bistram (1859-1905). He was from Waddax im Kurland (now Vadakste, Latvia), and he was murdered in a church in nearby Sesava, during a rebellion. Label of the Berlin publisher and bookshop R. Friedländer in the left top margin of the title page, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Berlin, Preussische Geologische Landesanstalt, 1928. Large 8vo. 99 pp., 62 text figures, seven plates. Original printed wrappers. = Contains the descriptions of several new species. A mint copy.

Wien, Kaiserliche Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1856. 4to (29.2 x 23.0 cm). 100 pp.; 16 lithographed plates (several partly coloured or tinted). Later half cloth over marbvled boards. Spine with gilt title. = This work by Reinhard Richter (erster Theil, on the general geology and the fossil fauna), and Franz Unger (zweiter Theil, on the fossil flora) is more or less a continuation of the 1848 publication by Richter on the Grauwacke near Saalfeld. The present contribution was published in the academy's Denkschriften and contains many (often new) species of trilobites, echinoderms, molluscs, etc., figured on three plates. The plants, on 13 plates, are nearly all new. Some very light spotting but nearly completely clean. The binding is modern, in contemporary style. A very good copy. Rare. Nissen ZBI, 3392.
