Lockwood's importance as one of America's first female lawyers, social reformer and first female presidential candidate is now well known. She is considered one of the leaders in the women's rights movement with her focus on the legal profession. Lockwood graduated from what is today the George Washington University Law School, although she had to seek the aid of then Pres. Theodore Roosevelt before the law school would grant her degree. She went on to become the first woman to practice before the US Supreme Court after she was admitted, through an Act of Congress, to the Supreme Court Bar in 1879. Lockwood ran for US President in 1884 and 1888 on the National Equal Rights Party ticket and became the first woman to be included on an official presidential election ballot. Lockwood was also an essayist particularly on the topics of women's suffrage, equal rights and world peace. Belva…

Description:
The Birth Control News was a monthly newsletter produced by Marie Stopes advocating for safe contraception for married women. Stopes was formally trained in the sciences earning a doctorate in paleobotany in 1904. In 1918, she founded the Society for Constructive Birth Control, and 1921, she opened the first clinic for birth control in Britain known as , "the Mothers' Clinic for Constructive Birth Control." Contraception became acceptable to the Church of England in 1930, for married couples only. Stopes supported eugenics, and like her American counterpart, Margaret Sanger, has been criticized for her perspective. The first issue of the Birth Control News came out in 1922. The nine issues offered here are: March- September, 1932; November, December 1932; January and March 1933. The publisher was John Bale, Sons & Danielsson, Ltd. In a publication Bale wrote and published about the birth control movement in England, he noted that in 1930, Stopes edited and published, "The Birth Control News." on…

Description:
Isabel Bishop , Autograph Letter Signed, with original drawing. The working class woman in mid-century Manhattan was often the subject of Bishop's art . Here, Bishop generously responds to an autograph request by including a sketch of a young woman on a subway train. She writes, "Thank you for your note, telling me of your being an autograph collector. You honor me by including me in your list...." To the left of her closing and signature, with pen and ink she draws a pensive, or perhaps napping, young woman on a subway, eyes closed, face resting on her hand. She sketched a question mark above her hair and noted the address for Times Square on the car's back wall, "42 St." She signs in full, "Isabel Bishop." The 8vo letter written from New York City is dated April 7, 1942. Bishop studied in New York at the Arts Students League and made New York her home. Her painting and illustration focused on the city's people and landscape particularly after she moved to Union Square in 1926. Before arriving in…

Description:
Rare Photography Broadside for a Parisian photography studio operated by Allophones Lionel who was active in the 1860s (according to Getty Images). Lionel advertises a guarantee that no photographer had offered: a proof - "epreuve" - of the image before the photograph is printed, and if the client does not like the image, the photographer will take a second photograph and offer a second proof for no additional charge. A caricature of the famed French photographer Nadar appears to sit on a camera in the broadside's highly decorative design. The sheet measures 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches and is normally aged with slight chip in upper left corner, else very good condition. Photographs of individuals in the carte-de-vi site style established in the 1850's became more popular in the 1860's with many photographers competing for clients. This richly designed broadside must have appealed to new customers. We have not found another example of this broadside. "Photography Universal Du XIX Cecile," Paris, ca 1860s. Autograph
