New York: New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1904., 1904. First edition. First edition. Author's first book. 8vo. Light evidence of bookplate removal from front pastedown sheet, else near fine in unfaded pictorial binding. The author, who was under indictment for bank embezzlement in 1896, fled to Honduras, where he was later jailed, and drew on his experiences there to compose the stories in CABBAGES AND KINGS. "In Coralio - a sultry coastal town in the volatile banana republic of Anchuria - a disparate cast of vagabonds, hucksters, mercenaries, merchants and consuls is busy plotting, scamming, drinking, loving or trying to forget the past. Each has his own tale to tell and his own particular reason for washing up on these tropical shores - and all have a part to play as this masterpiece of twisting narrative begins to unfold...."

Seeley / Century Road Club / of America / 1906." Image shows Seeley, adorned with ribbons & medals, standing behind his bicycle. This image possibly taken sometime after Seeley finished second [falling once] in the first century race of 1906 [starting & finishing in Brooklyn NY], just trailing Fred Mommer for the winner's honors. Cf. Brooklyn Eagle, 2 January 1906. Founded in 1901 the Century Road Club of America is the oldest and most successful bicycle club in America. L.E. Scherer evidently only a professional photographer for a brief time, as Langdon only has him active, under his own name, for the year 1906. Photograph generally clear & sharp, Very good plus. It is a full-figure photo taking most of a column. The balance of the page is taken up with an article on her. "Calamity" had been away for some years, and her return was regarded with interest by everybody in town. We made our way to lower Deadwood, past fruit stands, French cafes, wine-rooms, Chinese chop-houses and laundries, and stopped to inquire our way of the old colored woman who tells fortunes. "Right ovah dar on de hill. She's stayin' wid Californey Jack's family." We climbed the steep hillside and found a cozy little house set among the pines.
