Mary Whitcher was a member of New Hampshire's Canterbury Shaker community, a poetess, and the author of Mary Whitchers Shaker Housekeeper (1882), which is recognized as "the earliest cookbook in Shaker culinary literature, and the first to give bills of fare, or menus, for each day of the week together with 150 nutritious recipes for preparing a variety of fresh, natural foods. The book was not sold but was given, in accordance with the custom of the day, to those interested in the Shaker medicines advertised therein" (Amy Bess Miller, in the introduction to the 1972 facsimile edition of Shaker Cooking). The photograph is in fine condition, and contains a small contemporary ink inscription on the verso, "Mary Whitcher, Betsy Wright"

Includes the cancel leaf tipped-in at the rear, "Some War Recipes and Others". FIRST EDITION. An early and attractively produced San Francisco cookbook, issued as the city was finally putting the Great Earthquake behind it, but the nation was on the brink of entering the Great War. Recipes are attributed, and a separate list of contributors is included. The list is a who's Who of San Francisco society at the moment. FIRST EDITION. An early - perhaps the first - history of carbonated beverages. Issued together with a trade catalogue for the soda water supply firm of John Matthews of New York, an important manufacturer of bottling equipment, soda fountains, and carbonation apparatus. The fountains get progressively larger and more elaborate, and with wonderful names: "The Citadel", "The Horicon", "The Adriatic", "The Fire-Eater", "The Nepenthe", and "The Snow Queen". There I also an outdoor soda fountain, "The Street Spa". Also included are the auxiliary equipment of the carbonated water industry, like siphon boxes for home delivery of soda water. A promotional pamphlet published by the cardamom growers of Ceylon, with information on cardamom cultivation, cardamom use in cooking, medicine and perfume, and trade statistics. The tentative date is derived from statistical data for 1909 contained in the text. Original pictorial self-wrappers. Some soil and discoloration to wrapper margins, light additional wear, else very good. Unrecorded. [OCLC locates no copies].

Paris: Librairie Ch. Delagrave, 1912. Forty-seven folding maps (each 21.5 x 11 cm. folded; 43 x 112 cm. unfolded), in bi-fold, printed card stock covers. Second printing, in third printing wrappers. Edition and date information from "Les Anciens Cartes Michelin". The first Michelin maps to be published were, of course, of France, and they appeared in 1910. The original format at a scale of 1:200,000 remained in place until 1924, when the format was enlarged to 11.5 x 25 cm. and the wrappers printed in blue and orange. The maps show roads, road numbers, railways, prefectures, towns, monuments, and other details-verso front cover. Includes locations and index maps on cover as well as insets on some sheets. Each sheet is named and numbered individually. Some wear to edges, some wrappers worn a bit at the fold, but overall in remarkable condition. Very good. A collection of specific instructions on carving and serving various cuts of meat, including tongue, calf's head, haunch of venison, veal neck, etc. Mary Johnson Lincoln was the first principal of the Boston Cooking School and a student of Maria Parloa and the teacher of Fannie Farmer. Lincoln's milestone work, The Boston Cook Book, was issued in 1884, three years prior to the first printing of this work. Red cloth spine, with paper covered chromolithograph front and rear boards with beveled edges. Edges a bit rubbed; still, generally very good. With the bookplate of cookbook collector and founder of the Cuisinart, Carl Sontheimer. A scarce issue. Heath, born Francis Geoffrey Miller, was an English journalist and food writer who penned more than one hundred cookbooks starting in 1933 with Good Food. "A stew by any other name..." Small red ink stain to free front endpaper, and a few small spots to various pages; otherwise very good. In red cloth, titled at spine. Some light edgewear to dust jacket, titled and decorated in black and red. Generally very good.

An ambitious anthology of some one thousand recipes, all but a few attributed, directed at an audience familiar with canapes, caviar, and cheese from Neufchâtel-en-Bray. A number were sent in by well-known chefs, presumably on request - for instance, Apricots With Rice and Delice Joseph Relish , both from Joseph Boggia of The Plaza in New York. The family of Secundo Guasti, at the time the largest producer of wine in California, generously contributed entries for fish, gnocchi, and ravioli, among others. Not to be outdone, Mrs. Connell stood her own Onion Soup against that of the chef of the California Club.
