VII. 228 pages. and Frontispiece. 258 pages. + Frontispiece. 2 leaves. 277 pages. and Frontispiece. 2 leaves. 259 pages. Full calf, ornate smooth spines (period binding). A very rare novel generally attributed to Samuel Constant de Rebecque (1729-1800), "one of the most distinguished men in Lausanne's aristocratic society" (Godet). This Swiss writer, who frequented Voltaire, was also a friend of Madame de Charrière, and the present work is sometimes attributed to the latter (cf. Description:
4 works in 1 volume 8vo. 1). 14 pages. (1 blank leaf). 2). 16 pages. 3). 136 pages. 4). 15 pages. Later boards (spine summarily repaired). 1). Very rare first edition, printed in Madrid, of this poem by a French woman of letters living in that city. Now forgotten, Madame de Suberwick, born Germillon, wrote several works on Spain, in particular "Les Mystères de l'Inquisition et autres sociétés secrètes d'Espagne" (1845), a "curious" and "seriously anticlerical" (Caillet) work that was translated into several languages and reprinted many times. Written in French, with a title page in Spanish, the present poem, published under the pseudonym "Victorine de Féréal", depicts Spain personified in the guise of a "black-eyed woman, with the face of a Queen". Copy presented by the author to the Belgian novelist Estelle Crèvecoeur, known as Caroline Gravière (1821-1878), an avant-garde feminist "often compared to George Sand" (Gubin): "A Caroline Gravière, ton humble sur en poésie, V. de Féréal…
