Lima: April 24, 1811. About very good.. Broadside, approximately 17 x 15.75 inches. Printed on two joined sheets. Some worming, affecting a few words of text; larger losses reinforced with tissue on blank verso. Light toning and scattered, small patches of staining. Contemporary manuscript rubric at foot. A scare, late Spanish colonial broadside, regarding appointments and alterations to administrative councils that had authority over Peru, particularly the Supreme Council of the Indies. The text of this decree, issued by Viceroy José Fernando de Abascal y Sousa in Lima on April 24, 1811, promulgates orders from the King-in-exile, Ferdinand VII, and the Supreme Central Council that concerned the appointment of new officers and members of the Council of the Indies and several other government positions in the Spanish American colonies. The Supreme Central Council was a body that administered Spanish interests for the King during a six-year period following his abdication forced by Napoleon. OCLC… Read More

[Dawson City, 1901. Very good.. Five photographs, each measuring 11 x 14 inches, forming an 11 x 70 inch panoramic view of Dawson City. Each photograph with different gradations of toning (the central panel with excellent contrast, the rest with varying degrees of fading), minor wear. A substantial turn-of-the-century panoramic photograph of Dawson City, in five sheets, viewed from the west side of the Yukon River. The photograph was produced by H.J. Goetzman, who worked as a commercial photographer in the Yukon from 1897 until 1904, recording the scenery, life and activity of the route to the gold fields through Alaska and Canada, Dyea, the Chilkoot Trail, White Pass Canyon, Bennett, Dawson, and the Klondike gold fields. He ran Goetzman's Photographic Studio in Dawson from 1898 to 1904. Mexico City: Imprenta del Aguila, 1840. Very good plus.. [12]pp. Small quarto. Modern red cloth, front board gilt lettered. Faint dampstaining at lower corners, otherwise quite clean and fresh internally. A scarce decree that reorganized the infantry and cavalry of the Mexican Army following the vicissitudes of the late 1830s. During this period Mexico lost Texas, rebuffed the French occupation of Veracruz, faced independence movements from the southern states of Yucatan and Chiapas, and put down two military rebellions against Santa Anna after his return from exile. The present decree follows an 1839 order that called for the formation of nine new regiments of infantry and six of cavalry. Only three infantry units and four cavalry units could be raised, and this order positioned them in states across central Mexico, makes provisions for their organization and command structure, and also includes redeployments of existing units to address the threats of ongoing unrest. Description:
[Newberry, S.C., 1948. Very good.. 4pp., on a single folded sheet. Evenly toned. A contentious and racially-motivated political campaign leaflet in which Alan Johnstone, a white candidate for U.S. Senate in South Carolina, lambasts James M. Hinton, secretary of the Negro Citizens' Committee of South Carolina for pointing out recent comments made by Johnstone criticizing the appointment of federal court judge Julius Waties Waring, who was sympathetic to African American Democrats. Hinton himself was an African American Democrat, which Johnstone does not seem to welcome. Johnstone reprints two letters sent to him by Hinton interspersed with his own commentary criticizing Hinton, with certain bold-faced, all-caps phrases such as "THIS STATE MAY NOT BE INVADED" and "CARPETBAG GOVERNMENT," pointing out that "Hinton was born and educated in NEW YORK." Johnstone also writes that he believes the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the Constitution "were adopted in violation of the Declaration of… Read More

[Tyler, 1872. Very good.. Small handbill, approximately 6.75 x 3 inches. Minor wear. Light soiling and tanning. An excellent ephemeral item from the election of 1872 in Texas, comprising the Democratic ticket for the Third Congressional District, then composed of eastern and central portions of the state. The candidate for the Democratic Party was DeWitt Clinton Giddings, a lawyer from Brenham and a veteran of the Confederate Texas Cavalry. Giddings had won his seat in a controversial and violent special election in 1871. Although he carried the initial count by 135 votes over William T. Clark, the Republican Governor E.J. Davis manage to reverse the result citing violence and intimidation against Black voters in a number of counties. Giddings appealed directly to the U.S. House of Representatives who eventually decided in his favor. The present ticket also presents the slate of eight electors for Liberal Republican and Democratic presidential candidate in 1872, Horace Greeley, as well as state… Read More

A rare pocket map of Lake County, California, published by Edward Denny in 1904. The map is printed in blue ink and is divided into townships, with Guenoc and Gallayomi Ranchos identified near the foot of the map area, and major roads through the county delineated. Clear Lake, the county's namesake, is prominently depicted at center and numerous springs are located and named in its vicinity. The present edition of this map is the first, with revised editions published in 1907 and 1910. New York: Amerikanischen Traktat-Gesellschaft, 1850. Very good plus.. 64pp. In German. 16mo. Original dark green limp cloth. Light wear and soiling. Small marbled-paper bookplate on inside front cover, pencil ownership signature on front flyleaf from "Ellen S. Kem." A pocket-sized edition of Legh Richmond's The African Servant, printed in German by the American Tract Society. The work purports to tbe an authentic narrative of the Christian conversion of a free Black man named William, whom Richmond met while serving as a priest on the Isle of Wight, but the work is troubling to modern sensibilities. The work attempts to shift the focus from William's experiences as a slave to his conversion process. When William travels to the United States, his experiences there make him thankful for his time as a slave and makes him "regard his home in Africa as a place of spiritual darkness." Mexico City: Alejandro Valdes, 1821. Still very good.. 8pp. Small quarto. Removed from a sammelband. Light wear at gutter fold. Minor dampstaining and dust soiling at edges. Light tanning. Fascinating and very scarce pamphlet concerning the right of Mexico to elect an emperor, published anonymously just after the country was granted independence by Spain in 1821. The first several years of independence in Mexico were fraught by political division concerning the form that the new government should take. The Plan of Iguala, which was promulgated by Agustin de Iturbide and Vicente Guerrero and authorized in the Treaty of Cordoba with Spain, called for a constitutional monarchy. However, there was a strong desire in many quarters for a more liberal form of government, such as a constitutional republic, as well as some calls, as from the present work, for a more authoritarian style of rule. The author here argues that Mexico was political heir of the pre-conquest empire of Moctezuma, and therefore had… Read More

The very rare first edition of Robert Burford's interpretation of William Bullock's "View of the City and Valley of Mexico, from Tacubaya in 1822," which Burford adapted as a panoramic exhibited at Leicester Square in London in 1825. Burford's original painting of Mexico City is now lost, but the folding plate, measuring 12.5 x 19 inches, recreates the painting in two sections. The folding plate, titled, "Explanation of a View of the City of Mexico, exhibiting in the Panorama, Leicester Square," memorializes the city from Calles Platoros to the Regina Coeli Convent Church. Centreville, Tx: June 30, 1866. Very good.. [4]pp., on a single folded folio sheet of lined paper. Minor discoloration, mild wear. An interesting view of immediate-post-Civil-War rural Texas, specifically Centreville in Leon County. Centreville became the county seat of Leon County in 1850, and was the home of numerous members of the Burkhalter family. Nine Burkhalters are buried in Leon County's Concord Cemetery, but P.H. Burkhalter is not among them. In the present letter, P.H. Burkhalter reports to a friend on the challenging state of farming in the area, referencing the impact of freed slaves on Texas agriculture three times: "Mr Currie, I have nothing of an interesting character to communicate. The crops in Leon are sorry, we have the sorryest prospect that we ever had since we have been in the State. I think it was partly owing to bad management, and great floods of rain. Jackson, Ms: Surveyor's Office, 1845. Very good.. Lithographic map, 18.25 x 11.5 inches. Old folds and creases, minor foxing, very short split along one fold line. A rare survey map depicting Choctaw and Chickasaw cessions after the Indian Removal Act of 1830, and showing the changes wrought by the ensuing fifteen years of land speculation in the area.  The map itself centers on land in the Mississippi Territory south of the "Boundary Line Between the Choctaw and Chickasaw Cessions" down to the Gulf of Mexico, bounded in the west by the Mississippi River and in the east by the Alabama state line. The various areas within the body of the map are defined as "Choctaw District," "Choctaw Boundary of 1822," "Choctaw Cession of 1830," "Old Choctaw Boundary," as well as the "District West of Pearl River" and "District East of Pearl River." Pocket diary, [64]pp. of entries; two "Notices of Location" for Wiswell's claims in the Turnagain Arm Mining District, with two related Power of Attorney documents; a manuscript letter addressed to Wiswell at "Hope City, Cook's Inlet, Alaska;" and a receipt for Wiswell's return passage to Seattle; all dated "1896." A historically-significant collection of materials documenting George E. Wiswell's experiences during the little-known Kenai Peninsula Gold Rush (1895-98), which started a year earlier than the famous Klondike Gold Rush and, in some ways, became its forerunner. Gold had been found in the Kenai River already in 1849, but major interest in the area started only in the 1880s, with more discoveries in the neighboring creeks. The 1894 gold discoveries in the Bear and Palmer Creeks flowing to the Turnagain Arm led to the rush of local prospectors to the Resurrection Creek basin.
