Rubbed and worn, spine darkened. Bookplate of R.M. Beverley to pastedown, small paper shelf label and ink numeral 6 to spine. A dual-language Latin-Italian edition of the work of three classical lyric poets printed by the Remondini family firm. Library Hub records only the BL in the UK, Worldcat adds 7 Italian institutions and UCLA. This copy belonged to poet and polemicist Robert Mackenzie Beverley (1798-1868), author of several pamphlets on corruption in the Church of England and an 1867 book arguing passionately against Darwin’s theory of evolution.

The first of the Rachel and Damaris connector books, a prequel to the 1934 Abbey Girls book Maidlin to The Rescue.

Edinburgi [Edinburgh]: Apud Hamilton, Balfour, et Neill, 1751. LARGE PAPER COPY (176mm tall), 8vo, pp. xxxii, 292, [22]. Errata leaf bound at end. Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label, marbled edges. A little light spotting, title-page slightly toned. Spine ends and corners a bit worn, joints cracked and reglued, hinges neatly relined, label defective. A new edition, edited by William Wishart the younger (c. 1692-1753), Principal of Edinburgh University, of this Christian humanist dialogue by the Scottish humanist Florenius Volusenus (c. 1504-1546). Bristoliae [Bristol]: Typis F. Farley, 1748. 12mo. pp. 143, [1]. Contemporary quarter sheep, pale blue paper boards. Soiled and somewhat stained. Binding worn and rather soiled, front flyleaf excised, front hinge sometime reglued. Ownership inscriptions of Rd. Ellison and Joy Turner to front pastedown, both dated 1757 but in different hands, above that of Edwin Lovegrove dated Sept. 1858, all partially obscured by other writing and pen trials. Further writing to rear endpapers, ink inscription ‘A BOOK’ to rear board. This Bristol printing of this classic Christian devotional work was edited by John Wesley - as identified in Emory’s ‘The Works of The Reverend John Welsey, A.M.’ 1831 - and printed by the Wesleyan Methodist Felix Farley (1708-1753), who printed several of Wesley’s works and left both Charles and John Wesley a guinea each in his will. Contemporary sheep, unlettered spine divided by raised bands, edges sprinkled red. First gatherings a little proud and slightly worn at edges, one leaf with a small piece torn from blank margin, short wormtrail to blank margin of last few leaves. Binding rubbed, worn at extremities, a few strips scraped from rear board. The eighth edition of Thomas Hutchinson's reputation-making edition of Xenophon's Cyropaedia, first published in 1727 and reprinted once a decade thereafter. Later editions become harder to find, and ESTC locates just 5 copies of this one (BL, Morrab, NLI, Cornell, Illinois). ESTC T139189.

Paris: Chez Durand... et se vend A Francfort, Chez Jean George Eslinger, 1768. 3 vols, 8vo, pp. 381, [1]; 340; 252, [28]. Contemporary tree calf, spines divided by gilt rules, red and green morocco labels to spines. Poor-quality paper a little toned and spotted. Rubbed, a few small stains, spine heads slightly chipped. Armorial bookplates of Edward, Earl of Powis to front pastedowns, old stickers to head of spines numbered in ink. An early reprint of this scandalous enlightenment philosophy text, first published in 1758. De L’Esprit was condemned by the church, denounced as heretical and publicly burned in Paris for its atheism, as Helvetius argues that concepts of good and evil are taught rather than innate. The resulting furore ensured its success and it was translated into English the following year, where it later proved influential on the work of John Stuart Mill. Hagae-Comitis [The Hague]: Ex Typographia Adriani Vlacq, 1663. FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. [xii], 123, [1]. Contemporary vellum, boards bordered in gilt with a central gilt tool. Lightly toned and soiled. Rebacked to style, hinges neatly relined, boards soiled and marked, ties lost. Ownership inscription of Henry Williamson to flyleaf (crossed out), price of 10s 6d to endpapers, and further ownership inscription of Gasparis Delahoyde, surgeon, dated 1747. One of Vossius’s ‘more scientific tracts... [which] attracted considerable attention among his contemporaries’ (ODNB): he sought to explain the motion of the tides, a question of increasing interest, with reference to the heat of the sun exclusively, instead of the stars, the moon, or other forces. At the end he also discusses the use of a mercury barometer for predicting storms at sea. The following decade the text was translated into English to help it reach a wider audience.

Contemporary marbled calf, boards bordered with a gilt roll, spine divided in six compartments stamped and ruled in gilt, red morocco label lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. Corner cut from blank rear flyleaf. A touch of rubbing to extremities, small loss to head of spine. Ink ownership inscription of Grenville H. Wheler to title-page, Latin quote or note in ink to rear flyleaf. An attractive copy of the larger paper setting of this third and final Foulis edition of Cicero’s ‘De Officiis’. Parisiis [Paris]: Apud Tussanum du Bray, 1634. FIRST EDITION, second issue, folio, pp. [vi], 824 [recte 848], 15, [1]. Contemporary vellum, boards panelled in blind with central decorative lozenge, fore-edge extensions, spine divided by gilt rolls, compartments infilled with repeated spray and dot tools gilt. Toned, some spotting and rustmarks, a few tiny paper flaws. Vellum somewhat soiled and marked, spine label lost, front flyleaf sometime neatly renewed. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Gaisford, Dean of Christ Church, with printed catalogue mumber label (’1332’), to front pastedown. The final and most substantial work of William Bellenden (c.1550-1633?), published posthumously and long considered a great rarity: the story repeated in several places is that most of the edition was lost at sea when the ship carrying it from France to Britain foundered in a storm. Vellum ruckled and soiled, front flyleaf excised, section of rear flyleaf torn away, splitting at gutter between signatures F and G with one cord holding. ‘Library of The Catholic Club’ labels to title-page and foot of spine, remnants of bookplate to pastedown. A record of the decisions of the highest Papal court of appeal, by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi (1500-1552), who was made auditor of the court in 1525. The second issue of this promotional leaflet for the London department store, with their telephone number shown as 017348040 on the rear wrapper.

Paisley: Published by John Lawrence, 1822. FIRST EDITION, 12mo, pp. 4, 384. Original boards sometime backed in textured cloth, printed paper label. A little spotted. Recased, hinges reglued, later tape reinforcement to flyleaf, boards soiled, wear to extremities. Etched bookplate of Duncan Colville of Ardshiel, and bookseller's ticket of Ernest Mitchelson, to pastedown. The first edition of this guide to bathing spots across Scotland.	

Perugia: Tip. Baduel - Da Vincenzo Bartelli, 1836. 8vo, pp. 324 + frontispiece and 1 plate. Later vellum, boards bordered with double gilt rules, red morocco label, other compartments tooled elaborately in gilt, marbled edges and endpapers. Just a hint of foxing. Binding lightly soiled. Circular leather booklabel of Francis N. Smith to pastedown. A biography and guide to the work of the Italian painter Pietro Vannucci, often styled Perugino (after the Umbrian city nearby his birthplace), who painted frescoes in the Sistine Chapel and taught Raphael.

London: Printed by and for Nichols, Son and Bentley, 1817. 8vo, pp. iv, 49, [3]. Later blue sugar-paper wrappers. Somewhat toned and spotted, central vertical crease through front wrapper and preface leaves. Titled in pencil to front wrapper. This guide to Blackpool has its genesis, per his preface to the second edition printed here, when poet and historian William Hutton (1723-1815) found himself ‘struck with the place,’ and went into partnership with a consortium of landlords to produce the first edition in 1788. They neglected to pay him, so Hutton produced a second edition in 1804, which he hoped would be more successful for him, although a posthumous postscript from the publishers introducing this third edition to the effect that ‘a fire destroyed nearly all the copies of the second edition,’ would suggest otherwise. Copac records 8 copies, most in the north of England.

A Copenhague [Copenhagen]: Chez Nicolas Möller, 1773. FIRST FRENCH EDITION, 4to, pp. [ii], xliii, [iii], 372 + 25 engraved plates and maps (three with hand-colouring, a number of them folding) and 1 folding letterpress table. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label. One plate (XXI) shaved at fore-edge, a touch of minor spotting. Leather worn (especially at joints) and showing insect damage, label mostly defective, cords weakening but boards held. Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) was the astronomer, naturalist, and sole survivor of the malaria-stricken Royal Danish expedition to Arabia in the 1760s. This, his first book, was initially published in German the previous year and contains a number of important maps and much significant information, including the first European mention of Wahhabism. The plates include depictions of the mosques at Mecca and Medina.

Dustjacket chipped with loss to head of front and rear panel, flaps creased.

A household manual covering everything from basic recipes, to cures for diseases, to animal husbandry, written by lexicographer Nathan Bailey (c.1691-1742), whose work was an influence on Samuel Johnson. There are substantial entries on brewing and fermenting, raising and preparing chicken, suggestions for abortifacients, cheese making (Cheshire, Gloustershire, cheddar, Stilton, and more), ‘catchup that will keep good 20 years’, and mince pies, among much else.
