An unrecorded broadside advertising an appearance in Gardiner, Maine of Ducello's touring zoological exhibition, featuring illustrations of lion tamers performing with lions and exotic wild animals.  This production of Dan Ducello's Zoological Exhibition and Museum of Living Wonders took place on Wednesday and Thursday, the 24th and 25th of October, ca. 1880. Consists mainly of a synopsis of the plot with illustrations. Playbills reading "The Auditorium, Friday Evening, Jan. 1," etc. are printed on both sides of the back wrapper. CONDITION: Fair with chipping at extremities, soiling on front and back panels, 3 cm tears at center top and bottom throughout, notes in pencil on back panel with references to Shirley Temple 1925 and more. Interior clean with appealing illus.

François Poulain [Poullain] de la Barre (b. 1647 in Paris) rejected the dogmatic reasoning style of his scholastic education in writing this foundational feminist text. It is the first of three works, published in succession between 1673 and 1675, in which he makes an argument for the equality of the sexes. De l'Égalité des Deux Sexes was followed by De l'éducation des dames pour la conduite de l'esprit, dans les sciences et dans les moeurs: Entretiens (1674). This important pamphlet was published by Alfred Vail (1807-1859) after the successful test of a Congressionally approved experimental telegraph line spanning from Baltimore to Washington D.C. On 24 May 1844, Samuel F. B. Morse (1791-1872) transmitted the momentous first telegraph message-"What hath God wrought?"-through the telegraph line, using the version of "Morse code" that later became standardized in both America and Canada.
