First edition; folio, (40.4 x 26.7 cm); complete with engraved author portrait and architectural frontispiece and 60 further engraved plates, tissue repair to top of frontispiece, light tears on pp.2, 45, 283, missing corner on p.283, tape repair to plate xli; recent vellum binding; 340pp. This is one of the most famous books on shells, by one of the most important naturalists of the pre-Linnaean period. Rumphius (1627-1702) was a Dutch naturalist born in Hanau, Germany. He was employed by the Dutch East India Company. He spent most of his life on the Island of Ambon, and did not live to see the appearance of his book. In D'Amboinsche Rariteitkamer (The Ambonese Curiosity Cabinet), Rumphius named most of the common Pacific shells.

John Gould (1804-1881) is widely considered the greatest and most ambitious of all Victorian ornithologists, combining both artistic skill and beauty and anatomical accuracy. Following in the great tradition of Natural History illustrators, such as Barraband and Audubon, Gould enlisted the services of some of the most notable ornithological artists, including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and his own wife Elizabeth to compile the most outstanding and comprehensive bodies of work in this field. Comprising of eighteen major works he illustrated the birds of the world, from Asia, New Guinea, Europe, and Great Britain to the Families of Toucans, Trogons and Hummingbirds.

Intended as a limited edition for private circulation, the verso of the half-title has a printed line for the copy number (this copy unnumbered). 'The work consists of two sections, one on the state of the Turkish government in Damascus, and the other an account of the Christians in the Lebanon' (Blackmer). The Comte de Paris travelled in Syria in 1860. He was the son of the Duc d'Orleans. Chahine 3562; Blackmer 1226; Weber 584.

The Damascus Gate, the most used entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem, was built in 1537 under the rule of Suleiman the Magnificent, the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and has not changed since. It is located in the wall on the city's northwest side and connects to a historic path leading out towards Nablus (hence it is named in Hebrew Sha'ar Sh'khem - Nablus Gate) and from there, in times past, the path would lead to Damascus in Syria. In this photograph, a group of Arabs are seen to be leaving the Old City walls through the Damascus Gate. This photograph was included in the album Palestine and Egypt, issued in March 1894.Félix Bonfils (1831-1885) was a French photographer and writer who was active in the Middle East.
