First edition, thus, of this very scarce Extra, which was published in addition to the July 4th daily edition of the Oregon Statesmen announcing the destruction of the Spanish fleet in Santiago Bay. The editor notes how arrangements were made with Western Union and the Associated Press in order to generate this special edition for 4th of July celebrations, and all citizens were encouraged to bring flags and bunting to celebrate the victories of Admiral Sampson, and General Shafter near Sevilla, Cuba. Shafter would later accept the surrender of Santiago de Cuba and 24,000 Spanish troops on July 17, 1898.

Ogilvie (1849-1912), marked the Canada-Alaska boundary, mapped the city of Dawson, and was present when the gold strike on Rabbit Creek in 1896 launched the Klondike Gold Rush. The 1898 original illustrated and detailed the mines and mine owners of the Columbia Mine, Bonanza Mine, California Mine of Sumpter, as well as the tremendous growth in lumber mills, logging, and agricultural commercial opportunities in Eastern Oregon at the end of the 19th century. Hawley (1902-1991) was an active geologist, mining engineer, and historian of the Eastern Oregon gold rush who wrote the Account of Gold Dredging in the Sumpter Valley in Eastern Oregon.
