Filled with various advertisements, articles, commentary, reviews, and more. Two pagese feature an article titled "ECOS de Broadway", accompanied by photos of prominent figures including Puerto Rican poet and activist, Julia De Burgos, Solly Kann, and Dr. F. Polanco. There are also two pages of a "Galleria de Soldados Hispanos", featuring a gallery of Spanish soldiers an a brief biography of them. Plot follows a romantic lesbian relationship between characters Gail Hastings and Angela Winters. Front cover is bright with a barely visible small pen mark at the top, does not affect the image. Kwanza. 1969. Two 8.5 x 11" mimeographed sheets stapled together. Document outlines the meaning, symbols, and procedures for the weeklong holiday. Harriet Smith, later known as Sister Makinya Sibeko-Kouate, was a pivotal activist in Oakland in the 1960s, who helped develop and spread Kwanza as an Afrocentric holiday. This early document outlines the foundational and radical roots of this holiday. Only one earlier document mentioning Kwanza is held at any institution in the United States as per OCLC Worldcat. As student body president at Merrit College, Smith organized the first Black Studies programs in the country. During her college years she met Ron Karenga [Maulana Karenga], who had, in the aftermath of the Watts Riots in Los Angeles, drawn up ideas for a new Afrocentric holiday called Kwanzaa; Karenga created this as an alternative holiday for black Americans to learn about and connect with their African cultural heritage. Includes various introductory math lessons, including Numeration, Multiplication, and other mathematical operations plus several pages of medical family recipes. First page reads: "Teaches to express numbers by words or figures or to read and write any sum or figures. both writing small and large numbers and spelling them out in writen words. " The chapters than teach "Subtractions", "Simple multiplication", "Simple Division", "Addition of numbers of different denomination". Following pages follow the same simple formula, beginning with lesson prompts and then a clear written explanation of the arithmetic operation in plain English, followed by sample exercises using numbers to demonstrate the operation. These are all written in a very neat and legible early 19th century hand. [Women's Property Rights] Perry, Sir Thomas Erskine. Pair of Autograph Letters Signed circa 1856 to an unnamed female correspondent about married women's property equality. Totaling 8 handwritten pages, both signed "E Perry," both in good condition with only mild age related toning to paper. Perry, a liberal politician and proponent of women's property rights, actively petitioned in the House of Commons for the extension of legal and financial autonomy to women. In the first 4 page letter, dated 14 March 1856, Perry writes that his female correspondent's "petition in the House was I think well received...get up as many petitions as possible from different places to be presented on or before that day in favor of a change of the law...[and] have it signed by men as well as women." Notably, Perry recognized the need for alliance and collaboration among men and women, and he positioned gender equality as a human rights issue. Early 1920's handwritten manuscript describing the inner workings of an airplane with multiple detailed drawings and descriptions. 14 pages. 5" x 8-1/2". Includes handwritten drawings and journal entries explaining the "general data" including particular speed, weight, etc. of the planes. Drawings include a "main wiring diagram" . The handwritten labels on the drawings include: "Jaguar starting. See that both the engine magnets are switched off and that the throttle is in the slow running position. 2. With gas starter. Connect the gas coupling of the starter to the lead to the distributor of one of the two engine magnets. See that H1 lead switch from gas starter mag to engine mag is switched off. 3. Start the gas starter." A second handwritten description of a drawing reads "The ignition system is a highly developed form of battery-coil ignition, designed as an integral part of the engine. The general layout comprises a direct current generated gear driven from the engine." In excellent condition.

[African American Film] Film that defined the Black Horror genre dating back to the 1940s. Early 1940s Black Horror Film Voodoo Devil Drums Lobby Card. Toddy Pictures, 1944. Measure 11" x 14" and is in matte sepia-toned black and white. Voodoo Devil Drums is an early 1944 short film at 44-minutes detailing the life of a Black Zombie. The film is considered an early predecessor for the Black Horror genre, paving the way for films like Blacula and Candyman. The film stars Frank Nelson as a narrator who discusses the life of a black zombie. The film is considered a "Lost Film" as no prints have survived, making lobby cards like this one of the only proofs of its existence. In text below the image of a black zombie are the taglines "Strange Secrets never before revealed" and "What is a zombie" with additional illustrations.
