Description:
[Yates Center, Kansas], 1890. Black and white photograph measuring 7½" x 9½" on card mount measuring 10 7/8" x 13 ¾". Photo very good plus with several light soil spots; mount very good with heavy corner wear. A crisp image of the Woodson Hotel in Yates Center, Kansas, probably taken before the turn of the century. The photo shows a number of men, probably laborers and their bosses, during a break in the digging of a ditch and laying of pipe. A family in a horse-drawn carriage can be seen in the background, as well as a sign for Tom Keene cigars. The hotel was built in 1887 of Yates Center sandstone blocks and is now a luxury apartment building. This item is offered by Langdon Manor Books, LLC, antiquarian booksellers. Description:
[Chicago, Illinois]: [Johnson Publications], 1955. 11" x 8 ½". Stapled self wrappers. pp. [16]. Near fine with minimal wear. This is a separately issued special edition of Ebony, marking its 10th anniversary. It's smaller in dimension, page length (the newsstand November 1955 issue had over 170 pages) and is printed entirely in black and white. It also contains no advertising save for encouragement to subscribe to Ebony and Jet. The first page has a "Message From the Publisher," which states that, "EBONY was started ten years ago to mirror the brighter side of Negro life . . . Because it has filled a long felt need of the Negro for recognition and respect, EBONY has succeeded beyond our fondest hopes."That message is accompanied by portraits of John H. Johnson, president of Johnson Publishing Company, as well as his wife and mother. What follows is a heavily illustrated photo essay on the history of the company which includes many internal views of the Chicago offices, including its library,… Read More

Description:
Mexico, 1970. Mexico: N.p., [1970s?]. 15" x 11½". Watercolor and gouache on artist boards. Very good with light dust soiling, and light penciled numbers on upper right corners. These eight storyboards were acquired from an antiques market in Mexico and have a comic chicken and farming theme. Images are well executed with vibrant colors and amusing scenes such as the two chickens in the wrestling ring, and a group of three chickens sitting in a living room having a friendly chat. Five of the images involve chickens, while the remaining three have human characters. Of those three, two have characters who look like farmers, while the last one has characters with guns and money. We have been unable to determine whether or not they are from a known Mexican cartoon, but are nonetheless engaging examples of cartoon art. Description:
Washington DC: Fourth of July Hemp Coalition, 2003. Very good +. 14" x 8½". Small poster illustrated recto, text on verso. Very good plus: light edge and corner wear and just a hint of waviness. This quirky poster advertising the 2003 Fourth of July smoke-in at Lafayette Park in Washington DC was illustrated by artist Steve Marcus. Also known as "smarcus," his work may seem familiar as it covered a range of media, including cover art for "High Times", pieces on MTV and the Cartoon Network, animation for the Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication tour, and even a 4' x 2' stained glass piece for the Mesivta Tifereth Jerusalem yeshiva in New York City. When he first delved into the celebration of cannabis through his art, it was 1992 and the government had a hardline stance on drug use, including marijuana. Mainstream public approval that embraced the drug's medicinal benefits was still years away, making his outlaw art even more attractive to an underground subculture. The turnaround in marijuana… Read More

Description:
N.P.: N.P., 1950. Very good. 8½" x 5¼". Single sheet, text recto only. Very good with old folds. This is a rare copy of an antisemitic rant that never happened and was attributed to Benjamin Franklin, decrying the emigration of Jewish people to the United States. Allegedly transcribed by South Carolina politician Charles Pinckney during the Constitutional Convention of 1787, the speech first appeared in a 1934 issue of the Silver Legion Nazi sympathizer magazine Liberation. The vicious speech, purportedly made by Franklin at the Convention, calls Jewish people "vampires" and argues that "if the Jews are not excluded within 200 years, our children will be working in the fields to feed the Jews while they remain in the counting house gleefully rubbing their hands." The American Jewish Congress (AJC) published a complete exoneration of Franklin in 1938, authored by noted Franklin scholars, but damage had already been done. The speech, which came to be known as "The Franklin Prophecy," was… Read More
