New York, 1877. Good.. 31,[1]pp. Folio. Original orange pictorial wrappers. Light wear and soiling, some minor loss to wrappers. Text toned, slight biopredation to final leaf. A lovely catalogue of patterns for clothing of all types issued by E. Butterick & Co. The catalogue opens with styles for ladies' coats and dresses, moving on to wraps and jackets, then skirts and tops, followed by essentials such as bloomers and corsets and aprons and chemises. There is a section of clothing for "Misses and Girls," as well as doll patterns, children's clothing, and "Boys and Gentlemen." Menswear includes everything from smoking jackets and caps to overalls and kneebreeches. The rear cover advertises Singer Sewing Machines, which received numerous awards at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia the previous year. The front cover notes agents for Singer machines in Galveston, Texas, pinpointing the distribution area for the present catalogue. An excellent source for fashions of the period.

San Francisco: Fred S. Bain, Inc, 1922. Very good.. Folding map, approximately 13 x 17 inches. Light wear along folds. Minor staining and dust soiling. A neat promotional map of early-1920s Los Angeles, distributed by the Security Trust & Savings Bank. The reverse of the map carries a detailed street index as well as lists of hotels, railroad offices, and other significant municipal and commercial buildings. The map itself delineates Los Angeles from Hollywood and Highland Park in the north to Huntington Park in the south. Attached is a volvelle indicator which can be used to locate streets on the map in conjunction with the index. A second map, oriented along the left edge of the sheet, shows the major rails and roads of greater Los Angeles, from Santa Monica and San Pedro to San Bernardino and Riverside.

St. Louis: St. Louis Argus, 1936. Good.. Rebound in maroon library cloth, with original front wrapper panel adhered to front board. Library labels affixed to the front endpaper and foot of spine; stamps on the front board and title page. Pagination complete but out of order, likely owing to confusion during the rebinding process. A collection of over 400 poems by African American poet and preacher Thomas Atkins, published by the St. Louis Argus, a historically Black newspaper. Although little is known about Atkins' upbringing and early years, contemporary sources show he was born into poverty in Monticello, Arkansas, around 1890. After World War I he attended North Little Rock's Shorter College, and moved to St. Louis from southern Arkansas around 1921. He lived for several years at the Pine Street YMCA, an important hub of Black life in the city, and later records find him at various boarding houses in Grand Center. Uniformly tanned, some edge nicks and short tears, a few edges a bit frayed or chipped. A selection of issues of a scarce alternative newspaper published in San Antonio, Texas at the dawn of the 1970s, and dedicated to reporting on environmental, social justice, and counterculture issues. The issues present here include volume one, numbers 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 13; volume two, numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; and volume three, numbers 1 and 2. New York, Paris, London: Pathe Freres Phonograph Co, 1915. Good.. 78 RPM phonograph record, approximately eleven inches in diameter. In plain sleeve, accompanied by later, smaller-format illustrated Pathe brown paper sleeve. Some scratching on both sides, one small edge chip in blank area. A rare phonograph record containing two speeches in support of women's suffrage by two prominent figures in the struggle. Side A of the record records a speech by Rabbi Stephen Wise titled "Woman and Democracy." Wise was a founding member of the Men's League for Women's Suffrage, an American group formed in 1910 with the aim of supporting suffragists through "public appearances in behalf of the cause, by the circulation of literature, the holding of meetings, and in such other ways as from time to time seem desirable." Minor edge wear, some toning around the edges and at corners, one slightly misprinted with very minor loss of text. A visually-interesting group of a half dozen promotional postcards picturing various locations around Hammond, Louisiana, issued by the Hammond Real Estate & Investment Company, Limited. The company encourages potential emigrants and investors to contact them: "If you want to know about Hammond and vicinity, write to the Hammond Real Estate & Investment Company, Limited." The photographs on the postcards feature distinct locations, and each is printed with a different caption at lower right. These captions read: "A Country Road," "Pines and Palmettoes," "A River Drive," "The Tangipahoa River," "The 'Hammond Oak,'" and "Oak Street." Rochester, 1862. About very good.. 132pp. 12mo. Original brown publisher's cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. Corners bumped, moderate wear to corners and spine ends, cloth lightly soiled. Minor scattered foxing. Poetry written by a woman in Rochester, much of it with a Civil War theme. Among these is a poem entitled "The Volunteer," with lines which describes a fallen son being returned to his mother, her lament reading: "The North, the South, to me, / All places are the same! / My mother-tears have quench'd / The patriotic flame." Other pieces include "The Midnight Dirge" and "The Slave Girl." Relatively uncommon.

Mexico City: Imprenta "Central, 1900. Good plus.. 82pp., plus two folding tables; 92pp. Contemporary half morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Leather somewhat worn, boards rubbed. Contemporary binder's ink stamp on front free endpaper; author's gift inscription on initial text leaf of first work. Fairly even tanning; scattered underlining. A pair of ephemeral works of instruction and advice for young military officers. The first comprises collected short essays of "Instruccion" by Eduardo Paz published originally in the Boletin Militar. Topics include the proper comportment and behavior of soldiers as well as guidance on preparations for military schools. The second work, by Gustavo Salas and addressed to military school graduates, contains a short series of essays on varied topics, including the proper toilette of an officer, good business card design, and good methods for selecting a horse. We locate only one copy of each work, both at the BNM.

[New York, 1940. Very good.. Seven pamphlets, plus two duplicates. Some staples, with minor oxidation. Otherwise minor wear and dustsoiling; a few scattered patched of browning. A group of eight uncommon pamphlets issued by the Committee on Militarism Education to disseminate their arguments against military training in schools. The group was established in 1925 by three pacifist ministers, the Quaker E. Raymond Wilson, the Episcopalian John Nevin Sayre, and the Presbyterian Norman Thomas to campaign against compulsory military training at universities and all military programs for children. The organization remained in operation until 1940. Spine ends chipped, spine worn, fore edges scuffed. 19th-century ownership signature on front flyleaf. Light occasional foxing. An apparently unrecorded pocket-sized Mexico City edition of a compendium of fifteen "spiritual exercises" developed by San Ignacio del Loyola. The work also includes an introductory sonnet to Ignacio, preliminary sections containing "Advertencias Acerca de Estos Ejercicios," "Disposicion para tomar los Ejercicios," a prayer, and other preparatory passages, as well as an Appendix comprised of "Resoluciones" and a list of maxims of Saint Teresa. Of particular interest are the nine lithographs which complement the text, featuring Jesus on the cross and other religious scenes of Heaven, Hell, and the Bible. Later small ink stamp in top margin. Moderate dust soiling and toning. A strong worded, anonymous attack on the government of General José María Obando, twice president of Colombia. This 1853 broadside criticizes the president general and his army goon squads for attacking members of congress, their defenders, and some of the "ciudadanos de los mas intelijentes y patriotas de Bogotá." With the small ownership stamp of Colombian historian and bibliographer Eduardo Posada; not in OCLC.

Mexico City: Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, 1921. About very good.. Large broadside newspaper extra, 23.5 x 15.75 inches, printed in black and red, with central engraving by Posada above the main text printed in seven columns. Minor chipping to edges, uniform tanning, minor worming to last column, affecting a few words and just touching the caption title. A striking broadside extra from the waning years of the Mexican Revolution reporting in the bold red headlines about a few recent events related to the conflict. The first portion of the headline asks if Francisco "Pancho" Villa has captured General Francisco Murguia, which apparently did not take place. The other portions of the headline report on the shooting of seven revolutionaries in the state of Hidalgo, and a "horrible murder" of a young lady in Santa Julia. Toluca: February 11, 1847. Very good.. Broadside, 16.75 x 12 inches. Previously folded. Faint dampstaining at left corners. Two small wormholes, affecting one letter of text. Otherwise, minor edge wear and light dust soiling. Unrecorded printings of two decrees by the legislature of the State of Mexico at Toluca that sought to raise emergency funds to defend the country against American invasion during the Mexican-American War. Passed on February 8 & February 11, 1847, these acts authorized the state legislature to borrow 300,000 pesos, with one third of this money allocated to the army and the remainder to equip the national guard. This expenditure would be covered by a salary tax on government employees and additional taxes on alcohol, including pulque and aguardiente, sugar, and lumber. The second decree provides guidance and stipulations for the collection of these taxes. At this point in time, Santa Anna's army was rushing north to meet Zachary Taylor's forces at Buena Vista. Mexico City, 1897. About very good.. 247,[1];214pp. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt, leather label. Light wear to spine and boards; small scorch mark at fore-edge of front board. Text occasionally trimmed close. Tanned, but not brittle. Unrecorded popular Mexican edition of this French adventure story by prolific author Pierre Alexis Ponson du Terrail. The work, first published serially in France in 1869, tells the story of the magistrate of Provence town Mirabeau and his struggle against local brigands. This edition was published in the "Biblioteca Universal" series and is a good example cheap fiction being produced in Mexico at the end of the 19th century. Not in OCLC.

Bogotá: Imprenta del Neo-Grandina, 1855. Good.. 65pp. Large octavo. Original printed wrappers, rear lacking. Final leaf detached; Moderate creasing and wear at edges. Contemporary bookseller's ink stamp inside front wrapper. Light tanning and scattered foxing. In this scarce pamphlet, the suspended governor of Cartagena, Juan Jose Nieto, defends himself against charges that he failed to do his duty with regard to directing the military forces at his disposal during the Golpe de Mela in 1854. An appendix contains numerous supporting documents. OCLC locates three copies, at Harvard, Library of Congress, and the British Library.

Toluca: June 18, 1836. Very good plus.. Large folio broadside, 17 x 12.25 inches, printed in two columns in Spanish and English. Old folds, small stain near beginning of text, otherwise bright and clean. An exceedingly rare Toluca bando printing of the long-lingering 1828 Treaty of Limits between the United States and Mexico which finally sought to establish the boundary line between the two countries. The main text of the document is printed in two columns, in Spanish in the left column and English on the right. The main text is supplemented with an opening paragraph and several paragraphs following, all in Spanish. The broadside was intended to be displayed to the public in Toluca, Mexico to keep the populace informed of the progress of the treaty. Mexico City: Imprenta de Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, 1910. About very good.. Broadsheet, 11.75 x 7.75 inches. On dark orange paper. Moderate wear and chipping along two edges. Handsome broadsheet commemorating the passage of Halley's Comet in 1910, with a large, unsigned woodcut by Posada depicting a crowd of people peering at the comet as it passes overhead. The same cut was used in a previous broadside from 1907 for the Cometa Daniel, but the recto text here describes Halley's passage across Mexico from Veracruz to California and associates it with the centenary of the Mexican Declaration of Independence in 1810. The verso of the broadsheet prints a second woodcut illustration and a dialogue of "Mama Tierra con D. Cometa Halley." OCLC indicates a single copy at the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut in Germany.

San Juan, Tx: Texas Farm Workers' Union, 1980. Very good.. Eight issues, tabloid format newspaper, each 12pp., plus a couple of mimeographed inserts. Center horizontal fold, minor wear and toning, a couple of longer closed tears but overall in nice shape. A small but notable collection of eight issues of El Cuhamil, the official newspaper of the Texas Farm Workers' Union. The paper was issued from the border town of San Juan in the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas by the union, and printed in both Spanish and English in a dos-a-dos fashion. The paper covers affairs relevant to farm workers and the agricultural labor movement in the 1970s, with features on the TFW strike in 1976, the Coors boycott, the imprisonment of Chicano activist Ramon Chacon and others, the 1977 Human Rights March, and much more. The paper also reports on community news, includes letters to the editor, and transmits news of the activities of other labor groups across the country and in other countries. Lust wear and dust soiling to wraps; light tanning internally. Rare, extremely detailed study by the Colombian Ministry of Agriculture to promote the guinea pig as a low-cost and sustainable source of meat. The whole is profusely illustrated with numerous photographs of guinea pig husbandry in action and contains many recipes and advices for the butchering and preparation of these cute but delicious rodents. At the time of these study, guinea pig was an extremely popular meat in several other South American countries, but in Colombia was consumed almost exclusively by the people of Nariño, on the border with Ecuador, where street vendors of roasted cuy are still quite common. An important Mexican publication devoted entirely to news and reports of the war in Texas. Most significantly, the present work contains a contemporary Spanish translation of William B. Travis' "Victory or Death" message. The letter, written before the fall of the Alamo and justifiably famous for its dramatic final line, is also a detailed description of the situation in San Antonio. In some 600 words, Travis advises Texans that the Alamo is surrounded by Mexicans 400 yards to the east, 300 yards to the south, 1000 yards to the southeast, 800 yards to the northeast, and 800 yards to the north, and goes on to describe the forces arrayed against them and the Texans' own situation.
