Charles D'Oyly (1781-1845) was born in the very wealthy family of an East India Company resident named John D'Oyly, serving at the court of the Nawab of Bengal, and pursued his artistic interests in parallel to a career in administration. He is considered as one of the many talented contemporary amateur artists in British India. The current work stems out of his compilation of different scenes of British life in India, in particular, that of wealthy Europeans among native servants and entertainers, providing "an important window into Anglo-Indian social relations of the time" (UC Santa Barbara Library, online). Thomas Williamson is best remembered as the author of Oriental Field Sports (1807-8).
