S`Gravenhage: Isaac van Cleef, 1784. First Edition. Half leather binding with mottled boards. 42 engravings, comprising frontispiece - portrait medallions of the authors - by A. Cardon after W. Neering, title vignette by Cardon after J. Buys and 40 unsigned pictorial headpieces by Cardon and R. Vinkeles after Buys. Fables by La Fontaine, Lichtwer and many others translated and adapted by Bekker and Deken. Boards and leather are clean, with a little rubbing. The spine label is dulled with the gilt to the label missing. Internally in very good condition. The engraved headpieces mostly have their original tissue guards. Front board is a touch loose but still holding well. Previous owner's ex libris tipped into the inside board. xxxiv, 172 pp. 230 x 140 mm (9 x 5½ inches).

(complete). [19], 45, 238, (2) pp. 4to. 19th Century half calf over marbled boards. Marbled endpapers. Some poem / section numbers are printed incorrectly, but all are present, and all engravings are present. Slight rubbing to the edges of the spine, and a touch of bumping to the boards. The text block is spotless, with the engravings beautifully clean and bright. 260 by 210mm (10¼ by 8¼ inches). This is a scarce London edition. First Latin-French edition of Faerno'Â’s collection, an English-French edition was published two years before. Gabriele Faerno (d. 1561) was commissioned to compile a selection of Aesopian fables by his protector Pope Pius IV in c. 1550. Wymondham: Brewhouse Private Press, 1975. Limited edition of 80 in hardback cloth boards, with gilt stamped decoration. The poem is sometimes referred to as 'A Pathetic Ballad', this version is illustrated by Rigby Graham. It was published for private distribution at Christmas 1975. In the original work, the 42nd Foot refers to what was later known as the Royal Highland Regiment or Black Watch. Just light foxing to verso of marbled endpapers. Overall in good clean shape inside and out. 215 x 120 mm (8½ x 4¾ inches).

London & New York: Frederick Warne & Co., 1892. Scarce First Edition. Victorian illustrated children's verse book [1892]. In pictorial boards, with cloth spine. Beautiful colour and duo tone illustrations by the author - including a half title page, and a frontispiece entitled 'Good Morning'. Has a neat 1894 owner's name in ink to the front endpaper. Some fading to the spine cloth, and some rubbing / light soiling to the boards. Minimal foxing to inside pages, mostly to prelims. Overall a very nice copy. [32] pp. 230 x 185 mm (9 x 7¼ inches).

London : Ward, Lock and Co., 1872. Attractively decorated hardback boards. Floral inlay to front board. No date. Circa 1872. 12 coloured illustrations by the Leighton Brothers. An unusual book. Pagination starts from page 49, as does the contents list. So pages are numbered 49 - 92. Clearly complete in itself, and too large for a sample. Perhaps this was intended as part of a larger work? It appears to comprise half of the only similar copy we can find (which has 92 pages and 24 plates but clearly a different title page and frontis). We can find no other similar online. See photos. Some of Beerbohm's most memorable caricatures of the likes of Shaw, D'Annunzio, Hardy, Asquith, Rostand, Caruso, etc and etc. Unpaginated. 230 by 170mm (9 by 6¾ inches).

Paris: E. F D'Alignan, 1923. First edition. A nice copy of this scarce work. 44 or 55 copies on Velin d'Arches (from a total limitation of 405 copies). With 41 portraits mounted on plates Paper covers. Some darkening and staining. The spine has nicking and chipping to the paper. Binding is slightly weak, and the first gather falls open on the tipped in illustration of Jean Pellerin. Overall though, the work is in very nice condition internally. Some pages uncut. 206 pages. 290 by 195mm (11½ by 7¾ inches). Chana Orloff emigrated with her Jewish family from the Ukraine to the British Mandate of Palestine in 1904 after pogroms. After six years, she moved to Paris, where she enrolled in the Ecole nationale superieure des arts decoratifs. After one year, in 1911, she transferred to the Academie Russe at Montparnasse to begin training in sculpture. Anonymous color lithograph on cardboard by published by Georg August Walter, Mainz around 1910.With the title in stone and typographic address On light cardboard. There is a 7cm closed tear (with old repair) to the right edge, and a small chip to the top left corner. Otherwise in very good condition. 420 by 595mm (16½ by 23½ inches).

The Catholic Institute grew out of the Metropolitan Catholic Tract Society. The organisation was formed "To protect the rights of Conscience of the Poorer classes of Catholics and to promote the interests of Religion and charity." Irish M.P. Daniel O'Connell was also involved in the establishment of the Institute. Led initially by the Hon. Charles Langdale M.P.

Issued as number 174, in a series entitled: Political sketches - Issued in 5 volumes. (Daniel O'Connell; Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey) Description is: Lord Grey is endeavouring to allure Mr. O'Connell by the offer of a place. The inscription of Courier on his rod, intimates that the offer was made in a paragraph, put out by way of a feeler, in the evening newspaper bearing that title.
