Piney Woods, Mississippi: Piney Woods School, 1950. First Edition. Letter. Very good. 9 x 12" flyer, with b/w photographs of graduates, boy scouts and 4-H group. Fold lines, likely an enclosure. Flyer signed, "In the Joy of Spraying A Human Orchard, Lawrence C. Jones". "We have no 'sob stuff' or 'ism', other than unadulterated Americanism... In our human factory, we manufacture AMERICANS." The school was started at the turn of the century by a black educator, Lawrence C. Jones, to provide basic education for the children of field hands. In 1929, with the arrival of Martha Louise Morrow Foxx serving as principal, the Mississippi Blind School for Negroes was founded at Piney Woods. Still running today, more than a century later, most of the today's pupils are from poor, single-parent homes, many come from the 'toughest neighborhoods in the country', according to one of two 60 Minute specials on the school. Description:
Auckland: Clouds/Dent de Leone, 2012. First Edition. Paperback. Very good. Nova Paul . Long quarto + audio disc. "Form next to form next to form is a book made from stills from Nova Paul's experimental 16mm film This is not Dying (2010) that was made at the film-maker's marae Maungarongo in the north of New Zealand's North Island. Using an early cinematic optical printing process of three-colour separation Paul's films render the landscape in prismatic shards of technicolour. In this book stills are printed using RGB colours designed to echo the optical process of the three-colour separation film itself. The traditional Maori love song 'Whakarongo Mai,' played by famed Maori show band figure and Kaumatua Ben Tawhiti is played on slide and steel guitar for Paul's film and reconfigured here by Karl Steven on 7" LP." --Publisher description. Seven institutional holdings in the U.S. at time of writing.
