Philadelphia: Indian Rights Association, [ca. 1880s]. 8vo, self wrappers. 12 pp., errata slip affixed to head of p. 1. CONDITION: Good, 2" separation at upper spine, small pen mark in lower margin of p. 1, old vertical crease throughout. An Indian Rights Association pamphlet reproducing a letter by Prof. C. C. Painter, the representative of the IRA at Washington, addressing a "grave and pitiable" state of affairs concerning the Crow Creek and Winnebago Indian Reservations: "Three hundred thousand acres of land has been snatched from peaceable and well-disposed Indians, and without compensation to them has been opened to occupancy by the whites." Following a failed attempt by Secretary of the Interior Henry M. Teller to obtain a cession of some eleven million acres from the Sioux, President Chester Arthur issued an Executive Order in February of 1885 (within days of the close of his administration) that threw open for public settlement more than half of the Crow Creek and Winnebago…

[New York?, n.p.], 1917. 16mo (6.75" x 4.75"), plain brown wrappers, evidently provided by an early owner, hand-sewn with black thread at spine, and likely replacing printed wrappers. 16 pp. CONDITION: Good, horizontal and vertical folds throughout, with small vertical split at center of most leaves; last leaf soiled, with 1" tear at center and 2" tear at lower margin, no loss of sense. Stated sixth edition of this pioneering and controversial contraception manual by the leader of the birth control movement in the twentieth century. After witnessing countless women suffer and die from unsafe abortions during the course of her nursing practice on the Lower East Side of New York, and unable to gather sufficient information on contraception because of the Comstock laws, which banned the distribution of information on reproductive health, Margaret Sanger traveled to France in 1913 to conduct research on the subject. This frank pamphlet is the result of that trip. It establishes the importance of tracking…

Description:
[Johnstown, Pa.?, ca. 1900]. Illustrated broadsheet, 12" x 9.875". CONDITION: Very good, small tape repair to verso. A broadsheet advertising anti-Catholic lectures, along with a public challenge to Catholic Priests, by an influential "escaped nun" and possible KKK ally whose sensational lectures fueled xenophobia and nativist politics at the turn of the 20th Century. This advertising brochure promotes lectures to be given in Johnstown, Pennsylvania by Margaret L. Shepherd (1859-1903), who posed as an escaped nun and stirred anti-Catholic nativist furor in the U.S., Canada, and Australia during the wave of Catholic immigration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth Centuries. These talks were likely given in the years immediately preceding Shepherd's death: the "Open Letter to the Roman Catholic Priests of Johnstown" on the reverse openly acknowledges attacks on her character and refers to the Spanish-American War: "The late war has taught Spain, Cuba, and the Philippines this lesson: To your…

Chicago: T. S. Denison & Company, 1922. Small 8vo (7.125" x 4.75"), light brown pictorial wrappers printed in blue and orange, 15 pp. CONDITION: Very good, slight discoloration to last two leaves and back wrapper; glue showing at hinges (text block solidly attached). First edition of this early work by a prolific and popular vaudeville writer of the Jim Crow era, in which Jewish director Levi Shootzum attempts to film a stage production of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Part of T.S. Denison & Company's "Vaudeville Sketches" series and among just three scripts that Arthur LeRoy Kaser published in 1922, this farcical tale was written in the first two years of Kaser's prolific publishing career. The script exploits multiple layers of "Uncle Tom" stage clichés by mixing them with other stereotypes of the Jazz Age: the shallowness of Hollywood glamor, the alienating effects of technology, and the inept and "excitable" Jew. Its dialog offers numerous opportunities for amateur troupes to localize their performance,…

Description:
Leavenworth, Kansas, 1901. Platinum print photograph, 19 x 24 cm plus mount. Early pencil notes on verso identifying individuals. Pictured here are the men involved in crushing a mutiny carried out by 356 inmates at the Kansas State Penitentiary Coal Mine on 17 March 1901. They are shown proudly posing with their pistols, all but one in uniform, apparently standing in front of the prison, two of them African Americans. The men, identified on the verso, are as follows: Back row (l-r): Mr. Thompson (Deputy warden), William Duckett, George G. Hannon, Pearl Tipton, Lewis Bowers, John W. Newell. Front row (l-r): Henry Stauf (a store keeper), George W. Boner, and Dave Welch. At the beginning of 1901, some 280 convicts who worked in the penitentiary's coal mines went on strike. Using mining tools such as picks and shovels they effectively overcame their unarmed guards. In turn, the strikers stipulated three square meals a day, better quality of food, and shorter work days. The present strike, which…
