Text in two columns. 256 full-page plates including 65 chromolithographs (many of which heightened with gold); profusely illustrated with engravings in the letterpress. Spines evenly faded to brown, minor shelfwear, light toning and occasional light spotting, generally a handsome set.

Magnier of red morocco over red pebbled cloth boards, sides stamped and ruled in blind, spine with raised bands and richly gilt-decorated compartments, white silk moiré endpapers, green silk ribbon page-marker, all edges gilt. Engraved frontispiece, title vignette, and numerous vignettes in the letterpress, all by Grandville. Very occasional light scattered foxing, generally an excellent copy in a mint binding. Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) was the most famous French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He is known above all for his Fables, which provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe and numerous alternative versions in France, and in French regional language.

Engraved vignettes to each title-page. Lightly rubbed, two small wormholes to upper joint of volume 1 and to lower joint of volume 2, contents pristine and firm, generally a very good set.

Some faint rubbing to extremities of spines, very faint occasional light spotting, contents generally very clean, overall a very good copy. Ex libris William E. Stuart with his book-label to front pastedown. Trivial small chip to head of spine of volume 2, contents clean and crisp, generally a most excellent set.

Binding rubbed contents including plates very nice and clean, generally very good. "The memorable acts of the emperors of China, taken from the Chinese annals. Engraved by Helman from original Chinese drawings in the cabinet of Bertin (now in Cabinet des Estampes, Bibl. Nat.)" (Lust). The plates are actually engraved mostly, if not wholly, from the designs of Jean Denis Attiret (1702-1768), a Jesuit painter who lived in China from 1737 to 1768, when he died in Peking. He was a favorite of the emperor, who honored him with the title Painter to the Emperor and made him a mandarin.
