His novel The Short-Timers was the basis for film Full Metal Jacket. Hasford is also known for book thievery, borrowing books from libraries and not returning them. When an arrest warrant was issued, authorities found 10,000 library books in his storage locker from libraries across the U.S., Australia, and U.K. Hasford served 3 months in prison. He died of Heart Failure on a Greek Island at age 45 yrs.
