Description:
[New York City]: [Come-Unity Press]/[Gay Revolution Network?], 1972. Near fine. Single sheet, folded horizontally at center, measuring 17" x 11", printed both sides. Near fine or better: fresh as the day it was made, with a crisp fold, but we're not sure if it was issued that way. This is a gorgeous enigma that contains promotionals for LGBTQ resources and projects, poetry and a short manifesto. While we are fairly certain that it was printed by the Come!Unity Press, its text presents a conundrum that needs further research as to which group may have been behind it. The flier opens to one full page of text and art with a large flower just below the fold which reads "Gay Revolution Networker." Vines emanating from the flower point to projects, resources and articles targeted to the gay community. Written late in the year, the section on the Gay Anarchist Survival Project was a call for volunteers to help create a soup kitchen and food distribution service for the LGBTQ community in need. There are… Read More

Description:
[New Salem, Massachusetts]: [Hop Brook Commune], 1976. Very good. 11" x 8½". Corner-stapled packet of five leaves of mimeographed typescript on paper and one single sheet of thin card stock. Publication sequence: Vol. 1, Nos. 1-3 (1975); Vol. 2, No. 1 (1976)]. All but one issue is a single leaf, printed both sides. Very good: light center crease from old fold; edges lightly toned; tiny corner dogears and a few penciled notations. This is a group of four consecutive issues of a publication issued by a gay community in rural Massachusetts, the Hop Brook Commune. The Hop Brook Commune, a self-described "anarchist community," consisted of nine members living in a large farmhouse on 31 acres in New Salem, Massachusetts. They were anti-consumer, anti-business and an ad they placed in the rural gay magazine Rural Free Delivery (RFD) stated: "Rules, we have no rules. If we were to draw up a rule, it would be that no one here will objectify another." This packet consists of (possibly the only) four… Read More

Description:
Washington DC: Guild Press, LTD, 1971. Near fine. 17½" x 11¼". Bifolia printed on regular paper stock. pp. 24. Near fine: folded horizontally at center as issued, fresh with minimal wear. This is an issue of a short run gay periodical that signaled the downfall of a gay publishing empire. Its publisher, the Guild Press, was founded by H. Lynn Womack, who had turned a small printing plant purchased in 1957 into a major operation which included more than one periodical, book publishing, a chain of gay bookstores, a mail order business--even a movie theater. Womack's accomplishments were not without significant sacrifice: he was arrested more than once for conspiracy to send obscene materials through the mail and his print shop was raided by the Morals Division of the Washington police in 1960. That series of events led to a federal prison sentence, which led to the first case related to homosexuality that went to oral argument before the United States Supreme Court. Womack prevailed in MANual… Read More

Description:
San Francisco, California, 1978. Near fine. 8½" x 11". Flier printed one side. Near fine with light toning at extremities. This is a flier for a poetry reading fundraiser for the Council on Religion and the Homosexual. While we locate little about the event, it featured a blockbuster lineup of important LGBTQ+ literary figures including Elsa Gidlow (misspelled here as "Giglow") whose "On a Grey Thread" is considered to be the first book of openly lesbian poetry published in North America. It also featured Judy Grahn and African American Pat Parker, both fairly early in their careers. Founders of Manroot, Paul Mariah (mispelled here as "Moriah") and Rich Tagett are also shown on the bill. While not noted as such, this was Mariah's copy. Very good: rear board with light paint splotches; lower inner margin of each leaf with a light crease; a few owner notations. Inscribed by the author to W.A. Hunton on the first blank page. This is a travelogue of a late nineteenth century journey to Africa written by an African American minister and educator, C.S. Smith. Description:
New York, New York: Ne*ro Youth [Magazine], 1941. Very good. 8½" x 5½". Single sheet, folded, printed all four sides. Pp. [4]. Very good: tiny staple hole; moderate vertical crease; edges lightly toned. This is an illustrated promotional flyer issued by the publisher of a rare Black periodical. The flyer was distributed by the publisher of Ne*ro Youth which was established in New York in 1940 and purported to be the mouthpiece of such organizations as the "National Organization of Ne*ro Youth," the "Afro-American Consumers Economic Union," the "Afro-American Institute of Research, Technology and Culture," and the "Black Legions of the Nile." The magazine's founder, Samuel W. Daniels, had established the Pan African Reconstruction Association in New York in 1934, to rally African American support for Ethiopia when Italy was preparing to invade the nation. Ne*ro Youth itself, per OCLC records, is quite rare, with only a few known copies spread among four institutions. The flyer's main promotion… Read More

Description:
[Philadelphia, PA/Dallas, TX/Berkeley, CA], 1959. Very good +. Five groups of stapled mechanically reproduced typescripts totaling 48 pages of text + six loose leaves containing nine pages of handwritten notes + three loose leaves containing four pages of mechanically reproduced Mongolian text (all measuring 11" x 8½") + photocopy of a map. Generally very good plus, with some toning and fading to pages. This is a group of materials concerning the study of the history, language and culture of the Kalmyk people, an oppressed Mongol subgroup. While the political oppression of the Kalmyk people dates back centuries, these materials begin just after the Kalmyks were allowed to return home from a World War II-enforced Siberian exile in 1957. In June 1941, the German army invaded the Soviet Union, and gained partial control of the Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. In December 1943, the Soviet government accused the Kalmyks of collaborating with the Germans and deported the entire population to… Read More
