Original green, gilt decorated and tooled boards and spine. Overall wear, with chipping at head, heel and corners. Copy contains 14 of 16 hand-colored plates, of a curious character. The text is almost modern, so essential is the characterization of a 16 year old boys first journey abroad. A curious quip at page 100 "such nice books as you can buy at Mr. Appleton's". Ten pages of ads for George S. Appleton's juvenile series at rear. (He was then on Chestnut street, Philadelphia, Pa). This copy "Presented to Martha E. May from her Grandfather Samuel Shafer".
