Lithograph printed in tones of back and highlighted in blue, yellow, red, and green wash.  Paper stock show discoloration in margins and on back, remnants of tide marks on the verso of the print; paper generally in good condition and image clear and the colors very strong. Matted. Lithographic portrait, produced by the firm Sarony & Major, that was published soon after the outbreak of the Mexican war in 1846 and Taylors early victories at the Rio Grande River. Fair Lawn, New Jersey: Essential Books, 1960. 8vo.  220 x 170 mm., [9 8 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches].  200 pp.  Illustrated a map of Rome and 168 heligravure images in black and white.  Bound in original gray cloth, decorative dust jacket by Yves Brayer.  Dust jacket shows minor wear to edges and at head and tail of spine, otherwise a very good copy. Well illustrated travel book to Rome, published in 1960 when the City was in recovery mode from the impact of the War.  The focus is on the gardens, fountains, architecture, and ornamentation that distinguishes this city as "Eternal" and offers the traveler a guide to its monuments.  Very nicely printed and produced book  and the black and white heligravures are particularly effective in showing off Rome during its revitilazion. .

Illustrated with four color lithographic plates, 8 tinted lithographs with gray and tan backgrounds, and 4 smaller black and white engravings.  Bound in publisher's green cloth, gilt title on upper board; some wear to the corners and edges of the binding, but otherwise a very good, clean copy.  Presentation inscription in pencil to G. S. Carlton from Nathan Wilmart/ August, 1880. Bufford of Boston.  Some natural discoloration to the paper stock. Split image showing the entry of General Havelock into Cawnpore after a strenuous battle to retake the City over the procession of his fellow soldiers carrying his casket.  Nice done with tones of black and gray against a off white background.

New York: William Gowans, 1852. 8vo. lxxv, 3, x, 105 pp. plus a 1p. list of the works of Allan Ramsay, 24 pp. Catalogue of Scottish Poets, and 4pp. list of books published by William Gowans. Illustrated with an engraved portrait of Ramsey by H. B. Hall after a drawing by the poet's son Allan Ramsay. Bound in original green ribbed cloth, decorated with Gowans' printers mark of a Carrier Pigeon in gilt on the upper board and in blind on the lower board. Bright and clean copy. Allan Ramsay's The Gentle Sheperd was originally published in 1725 went through numerous editions during the 18th century and reached icon stature as a symbol of the rustic Scottish countryside and pastoral life. In this edition Gowans used the standard text first printed in 1728 by Thomas Ruddiman and adopted by Andrew Foulis for his edition of 1788. Perry, 1845. 12mo.  145 x 95 mm., [5 3/4 x 3 1/4 inches].  131 pp.  Illustrated with five full-page woodcuts.  Brown publisher's cloth, decorated with embossed border design on both boards.  Cloth faded in parts, head and tail of spine a bit chipped; some light tide marks to text, otherwise sound copy.First third(?) edition, originally published in Dublin in 1798.  This novel is based on the play of George Lillo entitled, The London Merchant, published in London in 1731.  Thomas Skinner Surr turned the drama into a novel, which was published in Dublin and London, and then in Philadelphia, and Boston in the 19th century.  It tells the story of a young clerk, who after a number of tragedies befell his life, became involved with a prostitute and ended up stealing money from his employer and  killing his Uncle to finance his affair.Lillo's tragedy became so famous that it sparked an explosion of stories of this type and numerous editions were published in England and… Read More
