Description:
France, nineteenth century. Large fragment of an original embroidery design, likely for a shawl or tablecloth, executed in red watercolor. The stylized parrot, snail, and lizard are meticulously plotted out by hand, stitch by stitch, against a background of oak leaves and acorns. This design is plotted on "papier quadrillé" manufactured by the Paris publisher Chavant & Dessaigne. Fleury Chavant was an industrial designer who issued a number of influential pattern books in the 1830s and 1840s. In addition to finished patterns, his company offered a range of these printed grid papers, with gauges corresponding to every kind of needlework, enabling those at home to produce their own designs. A striking survival. Original watercolor, executed on two sheets of printed "papier quadrillé" joined together, entire piece measuring 15 x 32 inches. Publisher information printed at base of sheets: "8 en 10: à Paris, chez CHAVANT & DESSAIGNE Rue Cléry, No 19 / No. 23." Several pale pink areas where paint… Read More

Description:
Brooklyn: Hanging Loose, 1967. Second number of this long-running little magazine devoted to emerging and underrepresented writers, founded in 1966 at the Brooklyn apartment of poet and contributing editor Denise Levertov, who had taught Jarrett and Laurie. Simultaneously democratic and ephemeral, its original format, a sheaf of loose mimeographed sheets tucked in a mailing envelope, inspired its name: "If you liked a poem, you could pin it to the wall. If you didn't like a poem, you could use it as a napkin." This number features poems by Marge Piercy and a story by Elia Katz, among others. The envelope, illustrated by Mimi Gross, is addressed to Indiana writer and early subscriber Roger Pfingston. Over the following decades, Hanging Loose would publish new writing by Dorothy Allison, Ha Jin, Wayne Koestenbaum, Audre Lorde, Eileen Myles, and a teenage Emma Straub, and publish the first books of Sherman Alexie, Eula Biss, Kimiko Hahn, and Maggie Nelson under its Hanging Loose Press imprint. An early… Read More

Description:
London: Eragny Press for Les Cent Bibliophiles, 1909. Fine press edition, one of 130 copies printed by the Eragny Press for La Société des Cent Bibliophiles; this is copy 44, printed for Carl De Geer. The Eragny Press was celebrated for its distinctive mix of French Impressionist and English Arts and Crafts styles, and for the quality of the wood engravings designed by Lucien Pissarro and engraved by Esther Pissarro. This edition of Gérard de Nerval's Romantic novel about Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, Histoire de la Reine du Matin, was first conceived by Lucien Pissarro in 1903, but its production was too expensive to contemplate. Six years later, Eugène Rodrigues, president of the Société des Cent Bibliophiles and a champion of fine printing, provided the Pissarros with the financial backing they required. Experimental and innovative in design, incorporating color printing and 23-carat gold leaf, Histoire de la Reine du Matin demonstrated the full capabilities of the Eragny Press, unique… Read More

Description:
[San Francisco]: Imagerie Pellerin Épinal (An Intrinsics Production), 1964. Oversized psychedelic reproduction of a nineteenth-century Épinal construction print, the sixth in a series of six European architectural models produced in San Francisco in the 1960s. In 1796, Jean-Charles Pellerin founded a workshop in the French town of Épinal, turning out inexpensive, hand-colored woodcuts of Catholic saints, Napoleonic battles, and storybook characters. By the end of the nineteenth century, lithography had emerged as the preferred process for Épinal prints, and the range of subjects had greatly expanded. One popular genre was the construction print, providing generations of French children with do-it-yourself toy models of architectural landmarks. This eye-popping modern series of lithographs reproduces six historic Épinal construction prints on a poster-sized scale, the images reimagined in the fluorescent Day-Glo colorways of the mid-1960s. The complete series includes: 1) the New Town Hall in… Read More

Description:
New York, 1903. Original illustration by American artist Arthur Keller (1866-1924) for William Dean Howells's 1903 collection of essays, Heroines of Fiction. In that work, Howells considers the Victorian clergyman Charles Kingsley's 1853 novel Hypatia, a fictionalized life of the pagan philosopher, set in fourth-century Alexandria. Hypatia was one of the first women to study mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy. Murdered by a Christian mob for her outspoken Neoplatonist teachings, she became a symbol for feminists and a martyr for pagans. In Keller's striking portrait, Hypatia's open pose and concentration on her manuscript convey classical self-possession, but her pale skin and tousled ringlets reflect Kingsley's Victorian vision. Howells remarks: "Hypatia is really a young lady of the early eighteen-fifties, of the time when young ladies of her type were crudely called strong-minded. She was a sort of Alexandrian Margaret Fuller." A source of inspiration across centuries, Hypatia most recently… Read More
