Handsome map of New Orleans printed in color, with the canals, railroads, and electric street car lines highlighted. The map depicts the city from Lake Pontchartrain to the Mississippi, showing minimal settlement south of the river, primarily in the neighborhood of Algiers. Audubon Park, Metairie Cemetery, the city park, and fair grounds are all highlighted, as are many other smaller squares, cemeteries, and green spaces, including the Oakland Driving Park (today the New Orleans Country Club's golf course). At the time, New Orleans was a city of about 300,000 people. The present map shows that most of the neighborhoods along the Mississippi were traversed by "electric railways," with one line traveling north to the lake and terminating at West End, while one line operated on the south side of the river. Slight separations along a few folds, minor wear and soiling. A handsome map of Iowa, with each county printed in color and railroads delineated in red. Interestingly, it shows inter-urban electric lines projected or under construction at time of publication. Designed for travellers, it includes a hotel directory printed on the inside of the covers, and includes a postal and shipping guide together with the latest census data printed on the verso of the map. [Hampton, Va: The Press of the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, January, 1924. Near fine.. [8]pp. 16mo. Original self wrappers, stapled. Very minor wear. A very rare fundraising brochure printed and issued by Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute during the Roaring Twenties. The short, pocket-sized work includes sections titled, "What Hampton Is," "What It Is Doing," "What It Has Done," "What You Can Do," and "Tributes to Hampton." The first section states that General Samuel Chapman Armstrong founded Hampton after he "found thousands of homeless, helpless, starving Negroes clustered in miserable poverty under the sheltering walls of Fort Monroe, Virginia." The next section claims the school is "solving the race problem in the South" by "the stimulation of race pride" and other methods. The tributes to the school come from four notable white men: William Howard Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, Edward Everett Hale, and Charles W. Eliot. Hampton, Va: Normal School Press Print, 1886. Good.. viii,75pp. Original green printed wrappers. Some chipping to spine and edges of wrappers, a handful of earnest cello tape repairs. Internally rather clean. A rare session catalogue for the Hampton Institute printed at the school during the middle portion of the school's second decade. The work includes a brief history of the school, a list of trustees, courses of study, a report on the school from the principal, Samuel Chapman Armstrong to the trustees that incorporates detailed reports on the various school departments, each written by a department head, and more. A four-page supplement, dated November 1886 is laid in. Though the teaching foundations of this school for freedmen were laid during the Civil War, Hampton didn't open until the end of the decade; a division dedicated to teaching Native American youth began in 1878 and operated until 1923, and the principal's report here contains much on "The Indian School" at Hampton. Hermann and several others through the Canadian Rockies, British Columbia, and into Alaska. The first few leaves contain very nice images of Banff and hiking on the Illecillewaet Glacier. From there, the trip moves to Alert Bay, British Columbia and on into Dawson, Yukon Territory. There are images of gold dredging equipment in the Yukon, as well as images of the towns of Dawson and Alert Bay. From Dawson, the group moved on to Carcross, Yukon, and on to Skagway. [St. Louis], 1891. Very good.. Watercolor, 7.25 x 10 inches. Matted and framed in an early walnut frame with gilt accents. Contemporary notation on verso of image, "H.P. Wicker" of Boston. Image lightly but evenly toned. A charming, impressionistic watercolor scene of paddlewheel steamers on the Mississippi River at St. Louis, painted in 1891. The foreground shows a long steam barge with a paddlewheel peeking up in the center. Several gangways connect the barge to the shore, with the hint of several figures on shore near the boat. A second steamer plies the river in the middleground, while the outline of the city looms in the background. The artist, Ross S. Turner (1847-1915) was a noted teacher and painter of watercolors, particularly of landscapes and marine scenes such as the present work. Based in the Boston area, he traveled widely in search of motifs and inspiration, painting extensively in Bermuda and the Caribbean, as well as Mexico and Central America, where he spent time in coastal areas… Read More

Photos mounted directly to leaves, with contemporary manuscript captions. Occasional minor soiling and wear to prints, including one short, closed tear and one tear at corner mounting; album leaves evenly tanned. A well composed album of twenty-seven original images of San Francisco by W.B. Tyler, the late 19th-century California photographer. The photographs present here include a selection of that highlight Tyler's areas of focus, the San Francisco missions and Chinatown. The album contains eight images of Chinatown and its environs, including a short series of the Bun Sun Low Restaurant at 629 Jackson Street, as well as four images of the Mission Dolores and its surroundings. [Copper River Valley, Ak, 1905. Very good.. Forty-five printing-out paper photographs, between 3.25 x 3.25 and 4 x 6 inches, plus three real photo postcards. Minor wear, a few creases, occasional light soiling. A unique collection of almost fifty images capturing scenes in and around Copper Center in the Copper River Valley of Alaska in the years after gold was first found there in 1898. The images document pioneers panning for gold, running dog sled teams, posed in front of early wooden buildings in a bleak, snow-covered landscape, and more, as well as capturing shots of a riverside mill, a wooden bridge, scenery on the Copper River, and the majesty of the surrounding forests. A handful of the images capture pioneer women and children posed for the camera in winter clothing worn to combat the bitter Alaskan winters. [Onawa, Ia, 1871. About very good.. [88]pp. Handmade journal comprised of forty-four lined sheets, folded and stitched with twine. Outer leaves detached, minor wear at upper corner. In a somewhat cramped but legible hand. Manuscript diary and account book for 1870 and 1871 of Harlow Erskine, a farmer and lumberman in the small town of Onawa, in western Iowa near the Missouri River and the border with Nebraska. Erskine appears on the rolls of the 15th Iowa Regiment and apparently returned home to make his living after the conclusion of the Civil War. Approximately the first half of this handmade consists of his terse but frequent diary entries for 1870, which entail his daily farming, logging and milling activities. His entries also contain notes on events in town that year, many of which deal with school issues; Erskine was elected to the local school board in this year and it seems no less fraught than present-day iterations. Front wrapper chipped at top edge and lower right corner, small chip to lower left corner of rear wrapper, minor soiling to wrappers. Text block tanned but clean. An unrecorded hymnal published in Jim Crow Georgia, which was "compiled by Rev. G.H. Dunn, Presiding Elder of the Macon District of the Macon Georgia Conference and Book Steward for the A.M.E. Church in Georgia." The work includes a portrait and short biographical note on Dunn, followed by the lyrics to fourteen hymns. These songs include "I Wring My Hands and Cry," "I Am on the Battlefield for My Lord," and "Going Back with Jesus When He Comes." Most notably, one of the hymns is titled, "The Negro National Anthem." Otherwise known as "Life Ev'ry Voice and Sing," and later nicknamed "The Negro National Anthem," the song was written by James Weldon Johnson and his brother, John Rosamond in 1900. Minor wear and dust-soiling, light edge wear. A Japanese businessman's rare report on American retail store operations based on a tour he made in the mid-1920s. The author had been an executive with Hoshi Pharmaceuticals, a Japanese company that began as a drug manufacturer, and in the 1920s expanded into a network of retail stores throughout Asia based on the American chain store model. The company's founder, Hoshi Hajime, contributes a preface to this book. Timothy Yang explored Hoshi Pharmaceuticals' growth and adaptation of American retail methods (among other topics) in A Medicated Empire (Columbia University Press, 2021). Errata slip town away at title page. Internally clean. Early telephone directory for Hannibal, Missouri, Mark Twain's hometown. The Missouri & Kansas Telephone Company was part of the Bell Telephone system and headquartered in Kansas City. The present directory contains [43]pp. of personal alphabetical listings, followed by a [4]pp. insert of classified business listings. At the time, Hannibal was a town of about 18,000 people. Located in the northern part of the state on the Mississippi River, the town was founded as a railroad hub to connect to St. Joseph out west. We find no copies of this directory -- or any others for Hannibal -- in OCLC.

Old folds, some wrinkling, minor dust soiling. An unrecorded advertising broadside for an unrecorded (and perhaps unproduced) songster ostensibly written by Happy Bob Robinson, the leader of a traveling vaudeville company that traipsed all over the country in the last two decades of the 19th and into the early-20th century. The broadside prints the lyrics to four songs meant to be included in Happy Bob Robinson's "Medley Songster," touted as "A Collection of very Popular Songs, Composed and Sung with Great Success, by Happy Bob Robinson." The titles of the four songs are "Sensational Medley," "Jim Fisk," "Alabsom - A Parody on 'Kiss Behind the Door,'" and "Slavery Days." The latter song is laid out in three eight-line stanzas and a four-line chorus written in slave dialect, and indicates that at least some portion of Robinson's show was a minstrel… Read More

Small pencil annotation under title. A few very small areas of loss; two short internal tears. Light dust soiling. A striking illustrated broadside advertising a performance of blackface minstrel Harry Bloodgood, and his troupe, the Minstrel and Burlesque Combination at the short-lived Harrington's Opera House in Providence, Rhode Island. The present broadside is an interesting printing and theatrical artifact, being made up of two joined sheets in order to promote an altered program for the evening's entertainment. The upper sheet is illustrated by a reclining blackface figure and a rather limber acrobat, and advertises performances of Charley Walters and Johnny Morton, "a combination of all that is ludicrous and funny, together with the elements of beautiful music and singing." Illustrated with many special views." An illustrated account of the reconstruction of the Hauser Dam on the Missouri River in Montana. The original dam failed in 1908, after being in operation for just a year, causing severe flooding. This reconstruction took place from 1908 to 1911, and is still in use today. This work details the effort of rebuilding the dam, depicting all phases of the construction. Six copies in OCLC -- Denver Public Library, University of Illinois, Boston Public, Montana Historical Society, Yale, and the Canadian Centre for Architecture.

Scarce, illustrated promotional for Santa Cruz County, published in 1915 at the press of the local newspaper, the Santa Cruz Sentinel. The text provides an overview of the attractions of Santa Cruz, and then devotes sections to the Redwood forest and the Pajaro Valley, as well as fruit and flower production in the region and the growing poultry industry. With photographic views of the town and landscape of the surrounding area. OCLC locates only two copies, at Berkeley and UC Davis.

Philadelphia, 1883. Very good.. Vol. I, Nos. 1-13. Each issue 8pp. Large folio. Loose issues stitched together at an early date. Light wear and soiling to outer leaves, heaviest to first leaf. Daily newspaper published by the Old Guard State Fencibles of Philadelphia during the Fair of the Infantry Battalion held at Industrial Hall in Philadelphia in November 1883. The State Fencibles were a Philadelphia militia unit founded in 1813 and disbanded in 1900 with the advent of the National Guard. The fair for which this paper was issued was a gala bazaar fundraiser which lasted two weeks and drew over 10,000 visitors on the opening evening. The content is comprised primarily of advertising, with a few pieces on members of the unit and goings-on around the fair. Notably, the first page of each issue features a woodcut portrait of one of the members. "A guidebook for Hawaii based on personal impressions, with notes on Hawaii's history, industry, agriculture, education, social organizational activities, and individuals."— The Japanese in Hawaii.
