London [1828]. Lithograph map on paper backed onto linen. The map is hand coloured and shows the Hackney Cut from St. Mary Stratford Bow in the south, indicating the sites of proposed waterworks to this artificial channel of the River Lea (44 x 67 cm). Map soiled and discoloured in places. Manuscript note in blue pencil to upper margin. Small "S" in red ink and paper stamp at bottom right hand corner. Small tears to paper at right and left hand margin neatly repaired.

The map printed on paper, dissected and mounted onto linen. Red marbled paper to folded end sections, label with numbers in manuscript to upper folded end-section. Some toning and light soiling to map. Generally good.

One additional woodcut vignette of a monstrous fish on recto and woodcut portrait of Munster to verso. Browned overall.

Roberts was the first independent, professional British artist to travel so extensively in the Near East. His tour in 1838-9 produced 272 sketches, a panorama of Cairo and three full sketchbooks, enough material to "serve me for the rest of my life" (Roberts, eastern journal, 28 Jan 1839). Over the next decade he made "a series of intire new drawings" for the large coloured lithographs executed by Louis Haghe for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia, which was originally published by subscription, 1842-9. No publication before this had presented so comprehensive a series of views of the monuments, landscape, and people of the Near East. Numerous woodcut illustrations in monochrome and colour by Israeli educator Brurit Una throughout. Light wear to spine, generally a very good copy. An illustrated Passover Haggadah from 1930s Jerusalem, edited by the Jewish scholar Rabbi Dr. Joseph Unna.

LIMITED EDITION 88/100 initialled by the publisher, printed on hand-made paper with proofs on Japanese paper of the maps and engravings. 20 vols. 8vo. (2 x 14 cm). Original quarter vellum over blue cloth, with gilt medallion to upper covers, spines gilt lettered and decorated, top edges gilt, others uncut. With the original printed dust-jackets preserving a fine set. Profusely illustrated with folding maps and other illustrations throughout. Some inevitable wear to wrappers, light tanning to endpapers, but overall a remarkably fine set.

From "A Collection of Prints ... Illustrating the Dramatic Works of Shakespeare." published by Boydell, London, 1803. In 1789, the publisher John Boydell opened the Shakespeare Gallery, an exhibition space in London's Pall Mall showcasing paintings that exclusively represented scenes from Shakespeare's plays. The Gallery was a bid to revive 'history painting' (the practice of depicting scenes from the Bible, mythology or the classics) in contemporary British art, a genre thought to be of great public benefit because of its morally instructive messages.
